Cookoo – Home Cooking made Easy
We are being told more and more these days to pay attention to what we eat. Everyone from David Cameron to Jamie Oliver seems to have an opinion on what we have for dinner and the idea of opening a jar of spaghetti sauce is now regarded as positively shameful. The trouble for many of us is that when you are working at least 8 hour days with a commute on top, the idea of going home and peeling and chopping onions isn’t so appealing. Hence the birth of a number of companies who want to help us achieve our healthy eating goals with minimum effort. Most offer to send us various packs of ingredients and recipe cards, so all we need to do is throw a few fresh ingredients into a wok and voila; we have a stir fry worthy of Ken Hom! However, if even this seems too much like hard work, there is now a company called Cookoo who will do your home cooking for you.
Cookoo is an internet based company who work with a number of independent London based chefs to provide you with a nutritious, freshly cooked meal at the touch of a button. You simply go onto their website, select what you want for dinner and order up until 6pm that day. The chefs then make up your order (freshly cooked that day) and it is delivered at a pre-selected slot between 5pm-8pm. You can see which chef has made which dish on the website and the menu changes slightly each day.
The other evening we gave it a go. The menu is not extensive and tends to consist of a couple of smaller dishes (either starters or sides), about 3 main dishes and a dessert. On the night we ordered there were two types of savoury tart and a curry in the mains selection. We opted for both the asparagus and white crab tarts. They come with a small portion of quinoa and salad on the side. We also ordered a jumbo prawn and pork roll with a hoisin dipping sauce as a starter and a portion of chocolate and almond cake for dessert. I have to say the roll wasn’t terribly exciting unless dipped in the sauce but it was wrapped in a wonderfully fresh smelling selection of herbs and certainly got the meal off to a healthy start. The two tarts were both delicious and full of flavour.
The cake may not have been as healthy but it really did taste very nice indeed, with little pieces of chocolate chip running through it. The portions are not going to leave you busting out of your waistband, so you can leave room for a bit of indulgence at the end of your meal, should you want to.
At the moment Cookoo are only delivering to very central London postcodes (EC, WC W1, N1 and SE1). Also with prices ranging from roughly £5 for a small plate to £10 for a large, I would suggest their main appeal will be to those working long hours in City based jobs. However, if you have had a particularly long day or don’t fancy cooking after you’ve hit the gym after work, this is a very healthy alternative to a take-away. I also understand that they are planning on starting a lunchtime delivery service very soon.
