Delivering to Londoners during lockdown and beyond
HG Walters is an independent family-run butcher in Barons Court, West London which was established by Peter Heanen in 1972, and now under his stewardship is run by his three children Adam, Clare and Daniel. This highly acclaimed butchers source their meat from small speciality producers and farmers around the UK who raise free-range and organically fed animals in a traditional way. They have been voted ‘Best small butcher in Britain’ and ‘Best Butcher in London and the South East’.
Over the years they have established themselves as a destination for the stars and foodies alike as well as supplying over 200 restaurants, hotels and burger chains including more than 30 Michelin-starred restaurants.
But the heart of this family business is in retail and in order to look after their loyal customers during this pandemic HG Walter are providing a delivery service within the M25 in order to keep Londoners fed. So, with a full house during lockdown and plenty of hungry mouths to feed, so I thought I might try it out.
Since Coronavirus has taken its ghastly hold and lockdown life has become the new normal, shops, cafes and restaurants have been put under terrible strain and they are trying to find ways to keep going, and as a result, many seem to be providing home delivery and take away services. HG Walter has risen to the occasion and offer a great selection of survival boxes delivered to right your door.
I am particularly reluctant to buy supermarket meat on my weekly shop, preferring not to eat steaks at all unless they are of the highest quality. HG Walter’s pride themselves on having the best beef in the UK, intensifying its natural flavour, by dry ageing for a minimum of 28 days and up to 90 days in their custom-made Himalayan salt room, so I knew I was in safe hands. There are actually elements of the new normal which are proving to be quite a luxury!
The online ordering service was very easy to navigate and my order was delivered within 24 hours.
Available Survival Boxes include:
- Luxury BBQ for 4 -£110,
- Meat Survival Box £60,
- Basic BBQ for 4 – £65,
- Native Breed Steak Box – £42,
- HG Walter Breakfast Box -£22,
- Luxury Steak Box – £100.
They supply a Dairy Box, Staple Veg, Greens Box or Seasonal Fruit too.
Alternatively, as I did, you can make up your own box depending on your preference. In addition to meat and vegetables, HG Walters also has an excellent range of pantry staples including pickles, mustards, honey, crackers, risotto rice and plenty more.
I chose a selection of different meats including 250g Sirloin steaks, satay chicken brochettes, French garden chicken breasts and lamb loin chops, enough to keep the family going for a while. The meat arrived looking beautifully fresh in vacuum packed packages, perfect for freezing if need be. All with use-by dates on which I rather like.
We planned a family Saturday steak night in; these family occasions seem to hold more weight and excitement during lockdown and everyone joined in the cook up (even my vegan son).
The steaks were magnificent, perfectly plump, red, and marbled. Seasoned with sea salt they were cooked on the griddle to everyone’s liking. We kept it simple and served them with Parmentier potatoes, green salad, and a side of garlic butter at my daughter’s request. It didn’t disappoint, the meat from HG Walters was as good as it gets, it was unbelievably tender and delicious and the whole family commented on what a fabulous treat it was.
We have several more meals to enjoy throughout the week which we are looking forward to. This sort of service is just what we all need during troubled times!
