The Lamb at Hindon – a Country Hotel and Pub for the perfect staycation

With the beautiful weather we are having this year it’s a great time to stay in England, make the most of home attractions and enjoy our beautiful countryside. What better than a staycation at a traditional hotel and pub like the Lamb at Hindon in Wiltshire.

The Lamb in Hindon Wiltshire

Given the opportunity to review the Lamb at Hindon, a country hotel and pub run by Youngs, I was more than happy to do so. It’s just a short distance from the A303 one of the main routes down to the West Country, I’ve stopped there before with my family on the way down to our holiday cottage in Cornwall and remember that the food was good  – so much better than the typical services stop packed with tired holidaymakers.

Hindon is a small, picturesque, Wiltshire village with stone houses and a beautiful church. It’s ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside with Stonehenge, Longleat, Old Wardour Castle and the Medieval city of Salisbury just a few of the places within easy driving distance. The West Wiltshire Downs is an area of outstanding natural beauty which is also very popular in the shooting season.

The A303 can get very congested in summer, with long traffic delays around Stonehenge. When I reached the Amesbury roundabout it looked like the cross country route to Hindon was going to be the best option to take. It’s a very pleasant drive skirting around the city of Salisbury then heading towards Wilton and onwards through small, quaint, villages.

The Lamb country hotel and pub is right in the centre of Hindon with ample off road parking for customers. There are 18 boutique rooms, a bar and a restaurant. The original buildings are very old with everything being tastefully restored in keeping with its character.

My room was on two levels, a cosy space downstairs with a comfy sofa and tea making facilities, upstairs a bedroom and small ensuite shower room with a sink and toilet. There were complimentary toiletries and lots of towels. I was glad to see that there was an air conditioning unit as I was hot after the drive down from Surrey where I live. There’s also free wifi, always useful when you are out and about and need to keep up with your emails.

There’s plenty of space outside to sit and eat or enjoy a glass of wine or beer, with decking at the back of the hotel and a long seating area at the front. I hadn’t been to the Lamb for a few years before Youngs took over the tenancy and it was very noticeable that improvements had been made to this charming country hotel and pub.

The menu was just as good as I remembered and looked very appetising with a wide selection of dishes to suit all tastes as well as a daily specials board. Having asked the waitress for her recommendation, I chose the trout, lime and chilli fishcakes together with a side of sweet potato fries.  The food came nicely presented and the fishcakes were extremely tasty. To accompany my main dish, I ordered a glass of Featherdrop Bay Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I’m a fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs and this wine was a perfect match for the fishcakes.

For dessert, it had to be the vanilla pannacotta with strawberry compote and meringue.  The pannacotta looked stunning and it was delicious.

I tumbled upstairs to my room and slept very well, the bed was comfortable and the room was blissfully quiet.

I was looking forward to breakfast, included in the cost of a room. There are various cereals, fruit juices and toast as well as a very extensive hot choice menu making it very difficult to decide. I always find a full cooked breakfast is a bit too much for me, so I plumped for the Wiltshire ham and poached eggs on a toasted muffin. It was just right to set me up for the journey home. A pot of freshly made coffee came as part of my breakfast.

I certainly had a great stay at the Lamb in Hindon and would definitely recommend it as a great place to stay in Wiltshire if you are looking for a country hotel and pub offering good accommodation, at a reasonable price, in beautiful surroundings.

Meanwhile why not pin this post for later

I recently visited this place although did not stay there. I did, however, take breakfast there on the day I traveled home from Wiltshire to Sussex. It was SUPERB!!!!!! The building is beautiful and the interiors are very pleasing and comfortable. Service was warm and very friendly and the the breakfast was very good indeed. Good ingredients, beautifully prepared and very reasonable. I would certainly return here and would definitely consider staying.

If I ever get the chance to explore Wiltshire, I will definitely stay at this country hotel. I have never stayed in any hotel that is similar to the Lamb at Hindon and it will be a unique experience for me!
