An illicit affair for me and my hair:
While I may never have married, I do have a happy and long term relationship with my hairdresser. My hair is fine, straight and a rather boring shade of mouse. When I found my current hairdresser, a charming Japanese gentleman who specialises in ultra precision cutting, I fell in love. I think I’ve been going there for about 10 years now and only occasionally lapse into trying something different. Even the offer of a free review usually doesn’t usually work for me. It feels like an illicit affair now to go anywhere else.
But, something about the description of The Lion & The Fox in Clerkenwell intrigued me. Tim Pateman, one of the co-founders and hair director of The Lion and The Fox is a session stylist who has worked with many big fashion brands and magazines, including Vanity Fair and GQ. His partner, Leo Cackett is a London based photographer who works across a number of disciplines. They met on professional shoots and decided to set up a business which combined the skills of both Tim’s hairdressing and Leo’s photography.
The concept of The Lion & The Fox is a salon/art gallery with a distinct ‘fashion’ edge to it. Of course, you are sitting in a salon where the fashion shots are of hair models styled by Tim and photographed by Leo.
And, the building itself has that Clerkenwell charm – slightly dilapidated and rather quirky interiors. Those ultra fashion shots which terrify me were mitigated by the friendly team and the laid back decor
The wall in the wash section was covered with art by Tim Broome. I sat looking up at graffiti and relaxing while my hair was washed.
In fact my cut and colour was completely pain free. Olivia who did the colour for me helped smarten up the previous red base with blonde highlights by pulling through a few more highlights and then using a toner to soften the overall effect.
Tim himself cut my hair. I really respected the care he took to follow the line cut by my Hero rather than trying to do something new and ‘better’. I’m sure if I’d gone in saying I wanted a restyle I would have got just that, but instead what I got was just a mirror of the work Hero does on my not-to-easy to manage hair. I’m no longer in my twenties and I was just a little scared that in a high fashion salon I might walk out with hair cut like this really rather stunning model…but without the face to go with it! Tim comes across as a gentle and sensitive hairdresser who really tries to understand his client.
There’s a welcoming feel about The Lion and the Fox and it’s definitely a hairdresser I’d go back to if I found I needed somewhere new or was in the Clerkenwell area.
I loved browsing the travel and portraiture photography too.
Now, I generally don’t get comments on my hair, but several people over the last few weeks have said how nice it looks and asked what I’ve done. And, I even managed to do a ‘blogger selfie’ last week on the trip on the Belmond British Pullman. So, something must be going well.
