The Greatest Show of Lucha Libre, Roundhouse, Camden:
Wrestling, of any sort, may not seem like the typical interest of The London Unattached team. But I have to admit to secretly rather enjoying a bit of camp, flamboyant and theatrical wrestling. I’ve accompanied my fanatic son to Progress Wrestling, billed as Punk Rock wrestling, several times to their Camden home in the Electric Ballroom. Believe me, there is nothing like a room full of wrestling fans to create a great atmosphere. Which is why we’re excited that Mexico’s unique masked wrestlers are coming to London on Saturday 11th May.
Lucha Libre is a style of wrestling steeped in tradition, going back to the 1860s, that has stuck out from most other styles of wrestling. It is characterised by colourful masks, and the more athletic, high flying style that a lot of Luchadores use. These techniques have brought lots of success to wrestlers such as Rey Mysterio or Eddie Guerrero.
It has also produced newer stars that wrestling fans will be familiar with such as, Pentagon JR and Fenix.
Lucha Libre also has Exótico’s, which from my understanding, seem to be wrestling drag queens, more or less! One of whom, Cassandro, has been booked for the Roundhouse show. I really can’t wait to see that!
Another wrestler who is at the Roundhouse show is the silver-masked El Hijo Del Santo, the son of a Luchadore. He was famous for refusing to take his mask off in public to the point that he only revealed his face when he knew that he was dying, and he died a week after his unmasking.
Also appearing will be El Hijo del Fantasma, who might be better be known as King Cuerno due to his time in Lucha Underground.
For one day only, the Roundhouse will be transformed into a Mexican Arena, where spectators can immerse themselves in a mythical and ferocious world in which Good battles Evil through fierce and flamboyant competition.
Why not join us, and experience just how much fun wrestling really is.
