Made in Italy comes to Battersea
After more than 20 years of serving authentic and delicious Italian food to the diners of the King’s Road Pizzeria, Made in Italy, recently opened on Northcote Road in Battersea. It’s clearly been a successful launch as the joint was buzzing on the Thursday night before Christmas, but luckily your reviewers were fitted into the last available table opposite the open pizza oven.
It was immediately obvious that Made in Italy takes great pride in its on-site baking. We were served two types of delicious focaccia on arrival, and when our attention turned to the menu we had a choice of 4 different doughs for the extensive range of pizzas on offer.
Our starter was aubergine parmigiana £5.95 which was rich and perfectly cooked.
This was plenty to share, but our host insisted on us also trying a plate of burrata with fresh tomatoes.
The burrata is made locally in Battersea and was a beautifully creamy cheese which literally melted in the mouth.
The warm welcome from our host extended to a flask of delicious Nero D’Avola (£22.95) which he proudly told us came from vineyards only 15 minutes from his home in Syracuse, Sicily. This was the perfect accompaniment to our meal, although our eyes were also caught by the Negroni and Spritz “on tap”, which we may well opt for on our next visit.
On to the main course, and our pizzas were cooked to perfection with a light and crisp crust and generous toppings using quality ingredients. The focus is on producing digestible pizza bases, with a gluten-free option as well as wholemeal and multi-grain. There is a wide range of pizzas to choose from, including several named after Italian soccer stars with local connections – the Gianluca Vialli (£12.50) above rubbing shoulders with the Antonio Conte.
The Ortolana (£9.50) on a Neapolitan base was a delicious feast of fresh vegetables and pesto.
We were more than satisfied by our pizzas, but our host was insistent that we should also try Le Pizza Dolci – the speciality dessert- a chocolate pizza! We were a little unsure until presented with a ring of pizza dough stuffed with Nutella and ricotta, with a serving of pistachio ice cream on the side (£5.95). In a word, it was amazing – and our host was very happy to box up half of it to take home where it still tasted really good the next day!
With a lively atmosphere, high quality and authentic Italian food, a good choice of drinks and very attentive and friendly service Made in Italy, Northcote Road definitely ticked all the boxes for us and we’ll be back to enjoy their delicious pizzas again soon.
