Made in the Shade Launch Party – Hoxton.
Jeremy Thompson Jewitt, Jim Wrigley and Peter Lewis are three men on a mission. They are trying to create the perfect cocktail bar in the middle of the hipster heaven that is Hoxton. With blues playing on the stereo, award-winning mixologist Jim Wrigley has created a bespoke drinks menu that uses exciting ingredients such as thyme-infused agave, lavender and pine syrup and fresh turmeric, whilst BBC celebrity chef Patrick Williams is in the kitchen serving up modern English dishes with a Caribbean soul food twist.
There is a lot of competition in this area so whether the place will thrive is down to the quality of the drinks, food and overall vibe. I tried three cocktails. The first was a Shady Maid Lemonade (£8.50). A blend of Beefeater Gin, fresh lemon and cucumber juice, citrus peel syrup and soda this was a perfect summer drink, light and refreshing with a citrus and cucumber twist. My next was listed as a UFC (£10) which stands for an Ultimate Fucking Cocktail (this is Hoxton…). This was a proper drink with an unusual mix of whiskey and rum mixed with a Ginseng liqueur and Guinness Foreign Extra Syrup. It had depth and complexity which suits a chap like me…
My final was an off menu negroni for which the barman used Punt e Mes, a darker and more bitter vermouth than many, to good effect.
