Fresh pasta meals delivered to your door from Nonna Tonda
Fed up of cooking yet, running out of inventive recipes to keep lockdown boredom at bay? Nonna Tonda has come up with just the thing to make dinnertime more exciting again and bringing a real taste of Italy right to your door with a great new pasta delivery service
Having recently had to close Nonna Tonda, their pasta restaurant in London, owners James and Rebecca decided to deliver their pasta to homes across London instead! Their mouth-watering pasta dishes are made freshly made each morning and delivered the same day, each dish includes fresh pasta, a sauce and fresh parmesan and can be prepared and ready to eat in under 5 minutes, what’s not to love!
James started Nonna Tonda with his wife Rebecca having done an apprenticeship at Michelin Starred restaurant L’Erba del Re in Modena. His experience in Modena sparked his passion for Italian food and in particular freshly made pasta. So, keen to discover more James and Rebecca along with their baby Freddie decided to pack their bags and go on a six-week road trip of Italy eating as much pasta as they possibly could whilst also buying ingredients from local markets to recreate and adapt dishes in their Airbnb kitchens whilst Freddie slept. During their trip they found out just how much Italy’s pasta varies from region to region, from the richer egg pasta in the more affluent north to the semolina pasta a little further south, they couldn’t wait to get back to start Nonna Tonda.
Every morning James gets to work rolling fresh pasta made from delicious St Ewe eggs from Cornwall and the finest Italian flours. The sauces are also made using the best seasonal British produce, everything they can’t source locally comes direct from Italy.
Two individual cardboard boxes arrived at my door, which if you’re not home are conveniently sized so they will fit through the letterbox. I lifted the lids to find an Italian feast each with beautiful looking fresh pasta, a sauce and little tubs of fresh herbs, toasted breadcrumbs, Parmesan and a menu card which provides easy instructions to ensure everything is cooked to perfection and retains authenticity to the region that inspires the recipe.
My boxes each provided a portion for 2, but you can order portions for 4 or 6 as well. You can also make special requests for vegetarian pasta or if you have any allergies etc. All meals can be frozen.
First up was orecchiette with romano courgette, garlic, basil and chilli oil, a take on a well-known dish from Puglia – orecchiette con cima di rapa, but James’s recipe uses romano courgettes, which are in season right now instead of turnip tips. Orecchiette is a traditional pasta of Puglia, its names come from its shape which resembles a small ear.
So with a box full of goodies all I had to do was boil the pasta for 2 minutes, heat the sauce and serve with a sprinkling of fresh Parmesan cheese. The result was quite delicious, al dente pasta coated in a luscious soft courgette sauce, with wonderfully subtle flavours of garlic and chilli. Perfect dinner for two.
The next evening, we ate squid ink spaghetti with braised cuttlefish, wild fennel and pangrattato. This is a typical Venetian dish, with a sauce that is well suited to slow cooking so the cuttlefish is beautifully tender. It was divine; great colours and textures, full of rich flavours and instead of parmesan (which is not served with fish pasta in Italy) it was scattered with fennel and scrumptious pangrattato, a type of breadcrumb baked with rosemary and garlic.
If you’ve ever holidayed in Italy and feel like reminiscing, or if perhaps you’re dreaming about a summer break in the Mediterranean sunshine, but lockdown has put it all on hold for now, why not transport yourself to Italy the easy way and treat yourselves to Nonna Tonda’s exquisite pasta dishes delivered direct to your door.
