Release your inner Gatsby and It Girl at a Roaring Twenties champagne party this August
With the current Covid travel restrictions, you could imagine it might be easier to visit the past than some countries. So, a big round of applause to Piper-Heidsieck for giving us the chance to go back in time to a more stylish and fun age by throwing three Roaring Twenties champagne parties this month.
Marking 101 years since the start of Prohibition in the USA, these themed events on 14th, 20th and 27th August will evoke the speakeasy era with food, live jazz, dancing – and, of course, Piper-Heidsieck champagne.
For a sneak preview of the fun – and suitably attired in feathers and flapper frock (she), bow tie and braces (me) – we jumped into our time machine (OK, we got the tube) and took a trip back to the 1920s.
What better place to host a Roaring Twenties party than the smart Swallow Street Rooms beneath Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill? A hidden gem just off the bustle of Piccadilly, it’s where for over 100 years the famous and the fashionable have been dropping in for oysters and other great seafood.
Not yet famous but maybe just a bit fashionable in our 1920s kit, we knocked on the door. Giving the password to the bowler-hatted doorman, and after much winking and nose-tapping in best speakeasy-style, we convinced him we were there to meet a Mr Piper and he let us in.
Greeted with champagne by Zelda in full ringmaster rig and her flapper friend, we took our seats and soaked up the Twenties atmosphere, enjoying the jazz and sipping the excellent, very drinkable Piper-Heidsieck and one or two cocktails from Bentley’s 1920’s lists.
To commemorate 100 years since Prohibition and to coincide with these Roaring Twenties parties, Piper-Heidsieck has launched a limited-edition bottle of their signature Cuvée Brut as ‘Brut Prohibition’. Sold in a smart gift box inspired by the original 1920s design, Brut Prohibition commemorates the doughty smugglers who kept Piper-Heidsieck champagne flowing into the USA. (A QR code takes you to a special film that brings to life the champagne’s journey from France to the American speakeasies).
The Cuvée Brut is the perfect companion to the Twenties dining, which Bentley’s have recreated from their archive, and they’ve conjured up small plate reinterpretations of their dishes from the period. As well as live oyster shucking, – a fresh oyster or three really is hard to beat, isn’t it? – the delicious menu features dishes such as Shellfish Cocktail, Vietnamese-style Oysters, Oysters Rockefeller, Lobster Thermidor and good old Fish & Chips.
And champagne is just the thing to get you up and dancing to the superb live music playing throughout the evening, the range of jazz standards is just perfect to show off your Charleston or even your Black Bottom to the crowd…
Returning to 2021 in our time machine-cum-Uber, we could only agree with the person who said ‘’The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.’’ They certainly do – they have the best parties!
Those 21st century Bright Young Things of all ages wishing to attend one of the Roaring Twenties nights can book tickets through the Bentley booking platform HERE.
