Korean is the new black – SuperStar BBQ:
SuperStar BBQ is a new Korean BBQ joint from the same people who brought you Bimbimbap, the mini-chain specialising in bowls of the Korean rice and vegetable national dish. I’m a Korean food novice so it was great to be asked to review so I could experience a food culture that was new to me.
SuperStar BBQ sits just off Tottenham Court Rd in the sparkling new Central Saint Giles Piazza development. The area is undergoing huge change with Crossrail slaying all in its path and new sites springing up like unexpectedly guests at a party. The room has some attractive retro 60s lighting but the focus is really on the barbecue grills which are built into the tables. Bowls of sesame, soy and chilli barbecue sauces as well as miso paste adorn the table.
But before the barbecue got going we started with a bowl of dry, crispy and delicious Chilli Squid (£6) washed down with a plummy 2014 El Tesoro Verdejo.
Next up were Kimchi Jeon pancakes (£5.50); the fried batter was studded with the Korean fermented cabbage favourite Kimchi giving each mouthful a pleasant kick.
Chicken Boolgogi (£6), Boolgogi feather (£6), Tiger Prawn (£6.50), Squid (£7) came out ready to be barbecued!
The barbecue was great fun and our waiter was very helpful when I was being a bit clueless. The food gained a tasty char and with a dip in one of the sauces had lots of flavour.
Because I was stuffed by now it seemed sensible to try the hot stone seafood Bimbimbap (£7.50). A mix of rice, seafood, pickled veg with a fried egg on top. What’s not to like!
If for you Peruvian is so passé, Ramen has lost its romance and Mexican doesn’t quite hit the mark then Superstar is well worth a visit for something new that would be fun for a hot date or a trip out with a bunch of friends.
