Pimp up your Sherry for the perfect summer drink
As we enjoy these last days of sun there’s still an opportunity to enjoy a long cool drink. We all love a G&T and more recently the bittersweet flavours of a Campari and Soda, Port and Tonic or an Aperol Spritz have found favour with British drinkers.
I’m a huge sherry fan with or without food and Tio Pepe’s iconic Fino sherry has been one of the more unexpected success stories of lockdown with sales up by a third. In Spain Fino is known as the perfect wine accompaniment for food, its savoury saltiness making it delicious paired with salted almonds, green olives, garlic mushrooms, Spanish omelette, seafood, grilled chicken or paella.
But this summer a new trend has emerged – Tio Pepe and tonic – perfect as a sophisticated replacement for a G&T and for sunny days in the garden. At London Unattached we get very excited about exploring new trends and sharing them with our readers so when a review opportunity came along we set about mixing 1-part Tio Pepe sherry to 3-parts of 4 different Fever-Tree tonic waters and the combinations were a revelation. Each blend had its own exciting character and with the diversity of good quality tonics available now it’s fun to experiment. Remember to always serve Tio Pepe well chilled, whether drinking it straight or mixed.
First up we tried Tio Pepe & Premium Indian Tonic. It’s lighter than a gin and tonic with a lower alcohol content and perfect for summer evenings. Citrusy and not too sweet, the sherry gives it a sharpness with the florals of the tonic coming through. Tio Pepe & Mediterranean Tonic has a deliciously lemony sweetness and is a really refreshing way to drink sherry in the summer. The coolest option on offer was the Tio Pepe & Cucumber Tonic with the blend enhancing the cucumber flavour without it being overpowering. Perfectly balanced, it was a unique combination. My favourite was Tio Pepe & Aromatic Tonic. Angostura bitters and tonic is a classic Italian alcohol-free summer’s drink. With the addition of the sherry, the bitterness of the tonic and the Angostura flavouring creates something smoother and more sophisticated. A 50/50 blend of sherry and the tonic turns the drink into a complex and exciting summer cocktail. Wonderful!
Tio Pepe Fino sherry is widely available across all major supermarkets, RRP £10, as well as on many good restaurant wine lists. All the tonics are widely available. Why not try something different!
