Pure and natural products from Bali.
It’s easy to get caught up in in the desire for ever-evolving beauty products which claim to keep you wrinkle-free and younger by the day, but recently I have become more mindful and I’m keen to treat my skin with pure and natural products, ones that are nourishing for me whilst also are ethically produced. Therefore, I was delighted to get the opportunity to try out a range of natural beauty products sent me by Utama Spice.
Utama Spice is a 100% natural skincare company based in Ubud, Bali. It was set up by Dayu Suci and Melanie Templer in 1989 to in order to produce pure natural aromatherapy and beauty products that retained Bali’s traditional use of herbs, as they felt that with the advent of modern products containing chemicals, the traditional Balinese methods were being consigned to the past.
Dayu has extensive knowledge of traditional Balinese remedies while Melanie has been keen to discover more about the wonders of the natural world. Together they rediscovered the amazing benefits of essential oils and other natural ingredients. When they first started out, they made all their natural facial care and skincare remedies by hand for their friends and family, but now over twenty years later Utama Spice is successfully selling their products to a much wider market.
However, they still retain their ethos and adhere to the Balinese cultural concept of Tri Hita Karana, which commits them to respect and work harmoniously with humanity, nature, and the divine.
As a family business, they have managed to keep the company relatively small so they are able to give their products the time and care needed to create well-made hand-crafted natural beauty products. The majority of their team is made up of young, local, independent women from the surrounding villages. They also strive to support the health of the global village and environment, they do extensive research to support the local natural resource base and to enhance local farming skills in such areas as organic farming, bee farming, and seaweed farming.
I received a selection of Utama Spice products to try as well as a nebulizing essential oil diffuser with some essential oil. Over the past couple of weeks, I have been indulging myself in these products. Everything smells delicious, and it feels fresh and pure and much less cloying than so many of the modern beauty products on the market today.
The lavender-infused body spray is perfect for carrying in my handbag, just a spritz of this soothes and calms the senses and it’s great on a hot day to refresh and hydrate the skin. I have also been spraying a gentle mist on my pillow to aid a restful night’s sleep. It is multi-purposed as it can also be used on clothes to freshen them up or it’s even light enough to use on your hair.
The face serum is for dry and ageing skin (sadly I do fit into this bracket) and is made with a combination of organic Argan oil and essential oils, it feels rich and nourishing and leaves a gentle glow on my skin.
The tangerine liquid soap is made with pure tangerine oil and coconut oil, it’s light and zingy with lovely citrus aromas, perfect for a morning wake up wash. Unlike commercial soaps, natural soap is real soap, it is made with plant-derived base oils, glycerin, and essential oils. It doesn’t make a lather, but it cleans and moisturises and doesn’t dry your skin out.
The Lavender body butter is wonderfully aromatic, and it’s soothing and moisturising. These body butters come in a range of scents including lemongrass and ginger, cocoa, rose, and tropical flower. The lip balms are moisturising and beautifully scented, I like to use lip balm in all-weather so it’s perfect to pop in my handbag.
I am especially pleased with my nebulizing essential oil diffuser, as I have been looking to get myself one for a while. This one is simple and stylish, with its wooden base and glass top, easy to assemble and clean. I have been using the lemon essential oil which is keeping my bedroom infused with a gentle aroma of fresh lemon. I’m now keen to stock up on a selection of different oils to suit my mood.
Utama Spice has a great range of skincare products, and they also do hair products, incense sticks, essential oils, diffusers, and bugs sprays, all of which are all available to order from their website (utamaspice.com).
I was particularly thrilled to receive these products as I am recovering from Covid-19 – read more about my experience and some of the other ways I’ve been helping myself to feel better
