My Million Pound Travel Bucket List:
I love travel. But, more than just loving travel I love LUXURY travel. I can remember travelling to Europe with a friend of mine from the States many years ago and using the various rewards points I’d collected to upgrade all our travel and hotel stays. His background, as a news photojournalist, meant he’d really travelled on the edge. And, although he’d gone back to college and qualified as a lawyer at that time he wasn’t travelling a great deal for work. As it happens I was – working in telecoms across Europe meant a different hotel every night and an itinerary that started at 5am on Monday morning and only finished when I got home to London, usually very late on Friday evening. I learnt to really value those occasions when for whatever reason I could travel club class, stayed in a five star hotel and got to enjoy a really top class restaurant. At the time he couldn’t see why I wanted to travel club class but, once he started to travel in earnest, I know he was quickly convinced.
I still love visiting the Intercontinental, London Park Lane, even if it’s just for afternoon tea!
There are plenty of places and things I’d still like to do though. Top of my list, after a brief trip to Antigua for Sailing Week, is to go back to the Caribbean. I want to sail, to relax and to enjoy the islands. I’d like to see more of Antigua itself (we didn’t have time to visit the capital St John’s for example) and to visit the nearby islands of Barbuda and Montserrat.
I want to stay somewhere special – after being spoilt at The St James’s Club, I don’t want to dilute my Caribbean experience with anything less.
With all the money in the world I’d take myself off to Malaysia. It’s somewhere I lived as a child and I’d love to revisit. I want to stay in a colonial style hotel in Kuala Lumpur, drive up through the Camaron highlands and visit my old home town of Ipoh before stopping for a beach holiday in Penang
Finally my million pound bucket list includes a visit to South America – and specifically to Peru. Of course I want to see Machu Picchu, high up in the Andes and the beautiful Sacred Valley. Of course I’ll be travelling there on the Belmond Hiram Bingham, the luxury train named after the explorer who discovered Machu Picchu. I want to explore the Inca and Spanish colonial heritage of the area and I want to visit Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and stay on Suasi Island.
Hopefully I’ll get to do all three things! I will certainly be taking my chance at the IHG Rewards Club Minute Millionaire competition – even if I am not winning cash a million IHG Rewards Club points would go a long way to helping me achieve my dreams.
