Roberson Wines-Seasonal Wine Tasting in West London:
My last visit to the Roberson offices was to explore London Cru, a production of artisan wine in London using grapes shipped from France. At the time Roberson was practically on my door-step – opposite my local. Sometimes though, we simply don’t see what it on our own doorstep until it is too late. So, when I was invited to a Winter Walkabout – Roberson’s annual pre-Christmas wine tasting – I was intrigued enough to make my way back to my old home.
Wine tasting takes place in the warehouse itself, at this time of year lit up with fairy lights. Of course the first station is Champagne – a selection of five ‘Champagne Revolutionaries’ ranging in price from £19.99 to £47 a bottle. These are small producers with a focus on quality, champagnes where the taste means more than the label. I’m happy enough with all of them, although by choice I’d be drinking the Brut Tradition Grand Cru, Egly-Ouriet which at £47 a bottle seems as good as any Vintage champagne I’ve tried, wonderfully dry and biscuity.
Had I time to work around the room, I’d have been able to sample a whole range of Christmas recommendations from the Wine Merchant, who in addition to an online retail business business, supply wines to many of the top restaurants in London (including the Savoy, The Ledbury and l’Atelier de Joel Robuchon).
As I was due elsewhere for dinner, I contented myself with a taste of stilton, a mince pie and a little Warre late bottled vintage port (£16.99 a bottle) – a genuinely lovely mouthful that worked well with both the mince pie and the stilton.
I headed off into the night genuinely sad that I couldn’t stay to try more of the remarkable selection of wines. But, Robersons DO run regular tastings – as I found out far too late. Definitely worth trying again, if the Winter Walkabout is any indication of the time of event they run – friendly, unstuffy and staffed by people who can tell you more about the wine you are tasting.
If you’d like to find out more about Roberson wines or go to one of their tastings, you can find out more from their website. The next tasting focusses on Champagne and is on 9th December.
