A city break at the groovy Ovolo South Yarra Hotel
Ovolo South Yarra, part of the renowned Ovolo Hotels group, offers a chic boutique experience in Melbourne, Australia. As a member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), it serves as an exceptional base for travellers exploring the city or visiting on business.
This modern luxury hotel combines a contemporary aesthetic with retro-chic flair, featuring vibrant artwork and an eclectic collection of pop memorabilia throughout its public spaces. Conveniently located near South Yarra train station, the hotel offers easy access to Melbourne Airport and the Central Business District (CBD). The surrounding area buzzes with activity, boasting independent boutiques for shopping and an array of bars and restaurants along the lively Chapel Street.
In keeping with the Ovolo standard everything needed for a wonderful stay is included even a self-serve guest laundry for those travelling around the area.
Situated on Toorak Road in South Yarra, the Ovolo South Yarra is an oasis of calm with comfortable and stylish accommodations. The airy and striking entrance hall with a wall of mirrors spanning the length of one wall draws you into the colourful reception area. The pop theme is ever present, behind the reception area are alcoves containing old radios, vintage TVs, vinyl records and cassettes. The artwork displayed on the reception walls is bright, colourful, and quirky.
I visited Melbourne as part of a trip to Australia. Determined to see as much as I could of Australia during my visit, Melbourne, a city known for its art and culture was a must. We were staying in a Groovy City room, the hotel has eight different room types ranging from the Go-Go Snug rooms, the smallest, to spacious Rockstar-themed suites named Sonny and Cher and Yoko and John.
Everything we needed was to hand, fast WIFI, coffee and tea-making facilities and an ironing board cunningly stashed away behind a full-length mirror. The bathroom was a good size with a shower and high-quality toiletries. Black-out blinds with nets in front could be operated at the touch of a switch.
The hotel lounge in the basement is spacious and stunning, with a full-size pool table, comfortable seating and secluded alcoves along one wall making this an ideal space for business visitors to hold a meeting. The bold use of colour and pop artwork and memorabilia is ever-present. The Wonderbar, located in a side alcove on this floor, is available 24/7 allowing guests to purchase drinks at any time of the day.
The hotel restaurant and bar, with the playful name of Lona Misa, are on the ground floor and are also accessible from an entrance from the street. This Latin-inspired restaurant serves dishes with a Latin twist, vegan and vegetarian options are given prominence on the menu. Vibrant paintings adorn the walls, with plenty of seating in both the restaurant and bar sections.
Apero hour, with discounted drinks at the bar, runs daily from 5.00 to 6.00 pm. The first drink during this period is complimentary for guests who book directly with the hotel. Definitely a relaxing way to end the day before going out for the evening.
The comfortable beds make for a blissful night’s sleep, we woke up ready to head for breakfast before going into the city for a sightseeing tour.
Breakfast is served in the bar area and the menu ranges from continental-style options to cooked dishes. I chose crunchy granola with house coconut yoghurt, fruit, berries and compote. It came beautifully presented and was the perfect way to start the day. My friend was also happy with her choice – poached eggs on artisan toast.
If you are heading to Melbourne and looking for a comfortable, luxury hotel with a groovy feel, the Ovolo South Yarra would be a great place to stay.
