Flaine Ski Resort – a hidden gem in the Grand Massif, France
If you want a ski resort with a big ski area, a snow-sure record and a short transfer time from Geneva airport then Flaine should be on your list.
Flaine ski resort is situated in the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps, part of the larger Grand Massif ski area comprised of five ski resorts which includes the villages of Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. With 139 ski runs, there is something for everyone in this French ski area covering 265 kilometres.
The transfer time from Geneva airport is a big advantage, getting you to the slopes to ski in Flaine really quickly. In good traffic conditions, the average transfer time from Geneva to Flaine is a short hour and a quarter compared to the longer transfer times of up to four hours, or more in the French school holidays, if you travel to resorts in the Haute Tarentaise area.
Flaine is known to be excellent for snow, with good early-season and late-spring snow. In addition, many of the slopes are northwest-facing, creating a cold climate that preserves the snow well into the ski season.
Flaine has been built to blend into the surrounding terrain without detracting from it. The modern concrete buildings nestle into the rocky hillsides; they are barely discernible when you look down at the town from the mountain. The resort has a strong focus on sustainability and preserving the natural environment, and any new developments are built with this in mind.
If you are looking to ski in Flaine, there is accommodation to suit every budget. From luxury self-catered apartments to basic apartments, and hotels such as the Le Totem at the heart of Flaine Forum, the four-star RockyPop Hotel & Spa Flaine, and Belambra Panorama Club Hotel. Flaine is car-free, for those choosing to drive to the Alps, you can drop off your luggage and park in the free car park at Col de Pierre Carrée. The free ski shuttle bus runs in a loop around the resort serving the accommodation and the car parks. If you are looking for a ski in ski out resort Flaine is excellent as the slopes are easily accessible from Flaine Forêt, Flaine Forum and the luxury Pierre et Vacances apartments Les Terrasses d’Eos and Les Terrasses d’Hélios which are served by the Gérats ski lift.
All facilities needed for a great ski holiday are readily to hand with shops, bars and restaurants in the resort and a good choice of restaurants on the pistes.
The skiing in Flaine is set in a big, open, bowl with lots of runs coming down from the top of the resort down into the centre, you can choose from numerous red or blue runs with some good tree-lined runs perfect for skiing in bad visibility. From the summit of the Grandes Platières Gondola, the views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking with Mont Blanc dominating the landscape.
From the top of the Grandes Platières, the Cascades Blue Run, one of the longest blue runs in Europe, an impressive distance of fourteen kilometres, drops down to the village of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Take the Grands Vans chair lift out of the centre of Flaine to explore the wider ski area of the Grand Massif, the slopes down to Les Carroz, Samoëns and Morillon from the top of the Grands Vans lift are long and sweeping giving a great sense of exploration. Flaine is a top resort for fans of off-piste skiing, the Ski Club of Great Britain run their Fresh Tracks off-piste sessions in the resort every year.

I stayed in an apartment in Flaine Forêt with stunning views over the Flaine Bowl. While this was my first ski trip to Flaine in the Grand Massif ski area, I briefly visited the resort while working in Morzine.
The skiing in Flaine is excellent, with spectacular mountain views, good mountain restaurants and a well-laid-out resort. If you haven’t skied in Flaine, you should certainly consider it for a ski holiday – I had a superb break and didn’t want to leave, I’ll be back!
