Summer is a great time of year for indulging in an alfresco afternoon tea. If you are looking for a delicious afternoon tea with a fabulous view, head to Sabine Rooftop Bar near St Paul’s Cathedral. This luxurious rooftop terrace has an incredible view of St Paul’s Cathedral and The City. Set within the Leonardo Royal Hotel London, there is a separate entrance to Sabine at street level with a lift to take you up to the seventh floor.

The décor is stylish with an indoor space with a bar and seating, an outside area with a retractable roof and a spacious terrace with tables and bright, comfortable seating. What a great setting to relax and enjoy a lovely afternoon tea in the sunshine.

The choice of tea includes English Breakfast, Earl Grey and green tea. It is served in a stylish glass teapot with an infuser and lovely white China teacups. You can choose a cocktail or a glass of fizz to accompany the tea for an additional cost.

I chose a glass of Pommery Apanage 1874 champagne, perfect for the occasion. My daughter opted for one of the specially created cocktails designed to pair with the afternoon tea, a Highland Sip. This was a mix of Highland Mist tea-infused Sabine gin, discarded Cascara vermouth, Campari aperitif and orange bitter – a take on the classic Negroni. This was an ideal drink for sipping in the sun.

The afternoon tea arrived on an elegant stand with an array of tempting food.  We tucked into the sandwiches in the savoury selection, roast beef and horseradish on sourdough bread, hens egg mayonnaise with cress on granary bread and pickled cucumber ribbons with mint ricotta on beetroot bread. The sandwiches were generously sized and very tasty.

A spicy Nduja and fennel sausage was a great savoury addition to the tea. I enjoyed the tiny poached prawn cocktail with vodka-spiked Sriracha mayonnaise. The prawns were sweet and succulent with an underlying touch of spice.

We took a break to enjoy the spectacular view of St Paul’s before starting on the sweet selection. First, the small plain scones that came with generous pots of strawberry jam and clotted cream.

The patisseries were delicate and enticing. There was a miniature red velvet cake that was sweet and indulgent.

The bitter chocolate delice perched on a chocolate sable biscuit with gold leaf was soft and chocolatey, a real treat.

I’m a big fan of macarons.  The mango macaron was excellent, having a light, crunchy exterior with a soft, delicious mango filling.

To finish, a little glass of pistachio and white chocolate ganache with katiafi. This was sweet and smooth with the added crunch of the shredded filo pastry.

Sabine Rooftop bar is a perfect spot for relaxing in the sun with an indulgent afternoon tea. The views are superb, you won’t want to leave; we could have happily stayed there much longer. 

Afternoon tea is available every day from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm at a reasonable cost of £65. Add a glass of Pommery Apanage champagne for £15 or choose a paired cocktail starting from £18. A vegan afternoon tea is also available to book, with advance notice.
