Take a journey through Asia’s most exciting food traditions, guided by celebrated Chef Parminder Singh.
4.5 out of 5.0 starsPutney and Fulham riverside is home to a growing collection of excellent eateries. Here at London Unattached, we’ve enjoyed fine food at Pure and riverside views, salads and sides at the Coppa Club Putney. Chook Chook took us on a delicious railway journey through India’s regions, and now we welcome the arrival of pan-Asian restaurant Cho Asia to transport us to the most flavoursome spots on the continent.

Chef Parminder Singh is the creative force behind Cho Asia. He brings his extensive experience from a career that began at Delhi’s prestigious Oberoi Hotels, took him to Buckingham Palace, and led him to MasterChef: The Professionals via kitchens ranked among the best in the world, before establishing himself in London as the opening Head Chef of the highly acclaimed Indian Accent in Mayfair.

At Cho Asia, Chef Singh has curated a pan-Asian menu which draws from the flavours of Asia’s most colourful culinary spots. Cho means “to choose”, and Cho Asia’s menu is a veritable selection box of new discoveries and old favourites, all cooked and served to the highest standard.

Opening with a small plate of Dahi sev puri, you know you’re in for a voyage of discovery. This everyday Indian street food is given a delightful and delicious new pan-Asian twist using hot wasabi and sweet rose water.

Following with spicy chicken-filled moist dumplings, featuring garlic and chives, the excitement mounts and moving on to starters, a glance at the menu will convince you that a return visit will be required. There is just so much deliciousness to sample.

Choosing one dish each and one for luck, a plate of bang bang cauliflower takes this immensely popular dish to a new level. The cauliflower is perfectly cooked and coated in a feather-light, crisp batter served with sriracha mayo. Dry-burnt garlic pepper prawns are served butterfly-style and packed with flavour.

The 1990s chilli chicken offers a bowl of hot, sticky, moreish morsels – ours disappeared as fast as if they were popcorn.

If this level of heat is not for you, fear not; the menu holds so many tasty treats. Fluffy bao buns hosting wild mushrooms and chestnuts, small plates of delicate sweet and sour tuna tartare, ash-roasted sweet potato, and pan-fried scallops with saffron cauliflower.
The list of main courses at Cho Asia is the equivalent of an airport departure board; choose your destination! Kolkata-style lamb shank? Hakka aubergine from Taiwan? Thai green curry? Prawn Manchurian? From India, slow-braised beef short rib korma or the paneer baked in cherry tomato butter sauce? Or from China, lamb and wild mushrooms with oyster sauce, wok-tossed prawns with sambal xo, or garlic pepper mushrooms with pak choi? There’s also an extensive Grill Menu, offering some serious flavour combinations: mint and pomogranite chicken wings, salmon with caraway seed and fennel, stuffed chicken kebab, to name but three.

Our deceptively simple-looking pan-seared sea bass served with a Malabar sauce was deeply flavourful and satisfying. It appeared to be the kind of food you could cook at home, until Chef Singh kindly took me through the list of ingredients and steps to execute in order to achieve that sublime, silky sauce.

If you’re a pudding person, you will be happy with the concise list of classic desserts. Chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding, and coconut jaggery rice pudding are all designed to serve your sugar craving. The chocolate banana fritters and ice cream will certainly hit the spot.

The wine list is also relatively short, but the cellar is large! Parminder Singh has a passion for the wines he serves and their ability to pair with his food. He collaborates with his supplier to order small quantities of wines that attract his interest, and guests are encouraged to ask what is available and to voice their preferences. We enjoyed a glass of Miquel Pons vintage Gran Reserva, and for our meal Chef Singh recommended Cho’s house white, a Romanian Vinul Verii Riesling blend which paired extremely well with our Asian odyssey. Cocktails, beers, soft drinks and some tempting house mocktails are also available.
With good-quality, reasonably priced wines and food (all main courses are under £20), Cho Asia is well placed to deliver a great experience. The restaurant’s décor is sleek and contemporary. With banquette seating, the space is reminiscent of a cosy Japanese izakaya, where flavoursome, freshly cooked food and cheerful service create a welcoming atmosphere. A sure-fire recipe for success!
