The Brook & Badger – A Proper Gastro Pub
4.0 out of 5.0 stars
London has always been known for its great pubs, but it’s been a while since I’ve discovered somewhere new which delivers both the atmosphere of a proper local and genuinely excellent food. Tucked away on Munster Road in Fulham, you’ll find The Brook & Badger, which recently opened under the expertise of publican Eamonn Manson, formerly behind the success of Sands End, Brown Cow and Cross Keys alongside his long-time friend, pop art dealer Adrian Palengat. It’s the sister pub to the award-winning Brook House on New Kings Road.

I visited on a weekday evening and was surprised to find it already buzzing with a lively Fulham crowd, spilling across the expansive terrace that stretches the length of the pub and filling the classic brick-built interiors.

The interior is warm and welcoming, with low ceilings, wood panelling, leather tub chairs, and wooden candlelit tables, giving it a country-pub-in-the-city feel. We settled into a cosy corner framed by botanical wallpaper and felt as though we were dining in a secret garden.

The staff were friendly, and the service was excellent throughout. We began by exploring the cocktail menu. I always like to try a Negroni wherever I go, and theirs arrived in a satisfyingly chunky glass, over ice with a slice of orange – the perfect aperitif. My companion opted for something lighter and more summery: the Honey & Giner Highball, which had a good kick from the Don Reserva, rum balanced with Beesou honey aperitif, ginger ale and orange bitters.

Head Chef James Scott’s menu is fantastic and genuinely difficult to choose from, with so many tempting dishes throughout. There’s a strong selection of nibbles, perfect alongside a pint or a glass of wine, as well as starters, mains and sides, plus three steak options, ribeye, bavette and rump. If I’m honest, we completely over-ordered, but my, did we eat well.

To begin, (from the Nibbles) we tucked into blistered, salty Padrón peppers and a gorgeous, whipped cod’s roe served with thick slabs of country-style toast. It was so light, creamy and delicious that we both agreed we could happily live on it alone.

Among the starters, the burnt leeks were a standout, resting on a bed of creamy labneh with a rich hazelnut pesto, a combination that worked beautifully. The seabream ceviche was wonderfully fresh, paired with charred nectarine, elderflower, fine slices of pickled jalapeño and coriander. It was a clever dish, balancing sweetness, acidity and heat perfectly.

We accompanied our meal with a bottle of Rueda Verdejo Bodegas LAN, Spain 2024. A fresh aromatic wine, with notes of citrus and green apple and good acidity. With three fish dishes on the menu, I opted for the roasted cod, with perfectly cooked, flaky white flesh, small bites of chorizo and sweetcorn, in a silky tarragon velouté, creating a wonderful combination of flavours.

My friend chose the roasted trout, served with charred cauliflower, grapefruit and a smooth cauliflower purée. The fish itself was beautifully cooked, though the dish could perhaps have benefited from a little more sauce to tie everything together. On the side, we ordered indulgent Parmesan chips, and really, who can resist?

To finish, I kept things light with a refreshing scoop of pear sorbet, while my companion opted for the chocolate ice cream. For those after something more traditional and heartier, the sticky toffee pudding looked particularly glorious as it passed our table.

I have a feeling The Brook & Badger will be a huge success. It’s a proper gastro pub and will be even more lovely when the sun shines on the terrace this summer. I’ll be back, and I’d absolutely recommend making the trip to Fulham for an evening there.
