Perfect pre-theatre dining at The Boulevard.
Soho has long been one of my favourite haunts, back in the 80’s I spent many an evening frequenting the clubs and bars and walking through the notorious Walkers Court which was flanked with sex shops and home to the famous Raymond’s Review Bar and Boulevard Theatre.

I went along for a full evening of entertainment, kicking off with a pre-theatre dinner in the beautiful Art Deco styled restaurant before seeing The Boulevard production ‘A Ghost Quartet’ in the theatre.

The restaurant at the Boulevard is reached by crossing a modern glass double-height bridge which provides a great view of the bustling Soho streets below; the neon lights of the tattoo shop light up Walkers Court and a few surviving sex shops sit alongside cool restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

The all-day menu is designed by head chef Greg Hillier, previously of The Commonwealth Club and The British Academy. He started working in restaurants whilst growing up in Australia, and learning the importance of local, seasonal ingredients. Here he serves up a broad range of dishes, which have a conscious leaning towards plant-based food, including smashed chilli avocado on sourdough and roasted curried baby cauliflower, black dhal, fresh coconut, crispy onions and lime or sumac oregano chicken with burnt aubergine and Iranian green pistachio.

We started the evening with a chilled bottle Le Lesc Côtes de Gascogne IGP – a crisp dry wine, with a fruity bouquet and lemon notes.

My fresh heritage beetroot salad was a prettily presented; the subtle flavours of the beetroot were cut through with a rich maple dressing, crunchy walnuts, and sweet caramelised grapes.

My friend’s whisky cured mackerel was perfectly offset by a crisp citrusy fennel salad and a beetroot purée.

For mains, the crispy-skinned Loch Duart Salmon was cooked to perfection, complemented by the vibrant chilli squash purée, served with charred tender stem broccoli.

My roasted breast of chicken was juicy and tender – served with a sweet creamy honeyed carrot purée and a beautifully compiled potato terrine and cavolo nero, perfect winter fare.
For desserts we shared a voluptuous meringue with crème fraiche and a berry compote.

And finally an excellent British cheese board with grapes, chunky homemade apple chutney and some crisp seeded crackers.

We enjoyed a really delicious, unfussy, reasonably priced meal, which was brimming with vibrant fresh ingredients. The service was excellent, the surroundings are stylish and contemporary and the location is a real gem….the perfect way to start our evening in Soho.
