Shakespeare’s Othello Ignites the West End in Star-Studded New Production
A scorching new production of Shakespeare’s Othello is set to blaze onto the West End stage this autumn, led by an extraordinary cast of screen and stage powerhouses. Opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 23 October 2025, the show features David Harewood OBE as Othello, marking a powerful return to the role that once cemented his legacy in British theatre.
Joining Harewood are Toby Jones OBE as the venomous Iago and Caitlin FitzGerald as the defiant and intelligent Desdemona. The cast also features Vinette Robinson (Boiling Point) making her West End debut as Emilia, and Olivier Award-winner Luke Treadaway as the tragic Cassio.
Directed by Tony Award-winning director Tom Morris (War Horse), with original music by PJ Harvey, this new Othello promises a bold, emotionally charged take on one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies. Set against the backdrop of manipulation, power, jealousy, and racial tension, the production will run until 17 January 2026, forming the first in a five-year series of contemporary Shakespeare adaptations by Morris and Chris Harper Productions.

A Cast Steeped in Theatrical Firepower
David Harewood, whose 1997 turn as the National Theatre’s first Black Othello marked a cultural milestone, returns to the role with fresh perspective and renewed vigour.
“Last time around I was very conscious of breaking through a particular glass ceiling,” Harewood said. “No concerns this time, and I’m looking forward to starting afresh.”
Toby Jones, known for his compelling screen roles in Mr Bates vs the Post Office and Detectorists, brings his unique blend of intensity and wit to the role of Iago.
“I am eagerly anticipating rehearsals for Othello with David Harewood, Caitlin FitzGerald and Tom Morris,” he said. “Preparing as best I can to immerse myself in this dark, sad, funny, mysterious world.”
American actor Caitlin FitzGerald, celebrated for her nuanced roles in Succession and Masters of Sex, brings a fresh interpretation to Desdemona.
“To explore a Desdemona who is full of agency, fearless in both mind and heart, and a true equal to Othello—this is a dream,” FitzGerald said.
A Visionary Creative Team
Morris, who previously dazzled audiences with War Horse, brings an epic and contemporary vision to the Elizabethan tragedy. He is joined by a stellar creative team, including set designer Ti Green, lighting designer Richard Howell, sound and additional music by Jon Nicholls, and casting by Anna Cooper CDG.
PJ Harvey’s musical contribution promises to amplify the emotional resonance and dramatic tension, offering a fresh sonic landscape for Shakespeare’s timeless themes.
“The glittering screen careers of David Harewood, Toby Jones and Caitlin FitzGerald are built on their love of theatre,” Morris noted. “This production gives us a rare chance to see them return to their roots, in a story that has never been more urgent or electrifying.”
The Start of a West End Legacy
Othello marks the beginning of an ambitious series of contemporary Shakespeare plays produced by Chris Harper Productions, with support from Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment. Each will be staged in the West End over the next five years.
With its explosive talent, bold direction, and a fresh contemporary edge, this Othello promises to be one of the most unforgettable theatrical events of the year.
Tickets for Othello at the Theatre Royal Haymarket are expected to sell quickly. Performances run from 23 October 2025 to 17 January 2026.
