The Tales of Beatrix Potter™ Afternoon Tea at JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel, London
4.9 out of 5.0 starsAn afternoon tea is an occasion to treat yourself to delicious savoury sandwiches and delightful pastries – a quintessential English experience. The recently launched The Tales of Beatrix Potter™afternoon tea at the luxury five-star JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel on Park Lane, London, is exceptional in every way.

This is served in The Park Room, a light and spacious space, and the view of Hyde Park and Park Lane provides a unique backdrop for an elegant afternoon tea. On arrival, we were happy to be seated at a window table, perfect for watching the world go by.
The tea commenced with a pear granita amuse bouche. This was light and refreshing, just what was needed after our journey to the hotel. We were offered a glass of Ruinart Brut champagne, an additional accompaniment to the menu, whilst we perused the extensive list of teas.

I decided on Earl Grey tea, a light and fragrant tea. My companion plumped for a silver tips tea, a delicate and velvety Chinese tea. The tea came in a stylish bone china teapot.

First, an assortment of dainty, savoury finger sandwiches: Cucumber and garden mint, smoked Oakham chicken with tarragon and crème fraiche, roast Aberdeen Angus beef with creamed horseradish, honey roast Yorkshire ham with Colman’s mustard and North Atlantic prawns with Marie Rose sauce. The bread was soft and fresh, the fillings were delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the creamy Oakham chicken sandwich.
Two small and delicate open sandwiches on soft brioche rolls completed the savoury section. Forman’s Scottish smoked with cream cheese and St Ewe’s egg with mayonnaise and chives. They were light and tasty.

For my companion, a vegetarian, the vegetarian and vegan menu: finger sandwiches containing tomato and avocado, cucumber and garden mint, artichoke and sun-dried tomato, roasted Portobello mushrooms, chickpea and nori cocktail, all served on light rye bread. Her open sandwiches were edamame, tofu, and vegan mayonnaise with a tomato, caper, and pickled shallot bruschetta. She was more than happy with the variety in the selection.
The balance of the savoury elements for this afternoon tea was just right, without being too heavy, leaving us plenty of room for the sweet pastries. We were offered another choice of tea, which we accepted. I chose the milk oolong, a smooth, creamy, light tea. My companion opted for the oriental sencha, a floral green tea.
The Tales of Beatrix Potter™ Afternoon Tea moved on to the sweet elements created by Executive Chef Patrick O’Sullivan, inspired by the much-loved books. Each of these dainty creations displayed a true mastery of pastry skills.

We tucked into the scones next, one of my favourite parts of an afternoon tea. These were excellent, warm scones with a slight crunch on the exterior and a soft inside. I chose the classic strawberry jam to accompany mine; my friend opted for the raspberry jam. The jams came in tiny pots with a side helping of Cornish clotted cream.

Next, the waiter brought a stunning blue egg, resting on a nest and perched on a wooden log. This added a theatrical element to the afternoon when our waiter cracked it in half. Inspired by Jemima Puddle Duck’s nest, the outer casing was made from coloured white chocolate with a panna cotta egg white and marmalade yolk on a nest of kataifi, orange, and honey.

The sweet honey taste came through well in the nest. This was an exquisitely presented pastry; we both found it overly sweet.

We decided to share the small pastries from the cake stand. For me, Mrs Tiggy Winkles’ laundry service, a tiny, layered cake square with blackcurrant jam and white chocolate cream topped with a miniature chocolate iron. The cake was soft and moist, while the white chocolate was very sweet.
My companion selected Mr McGregor’s garden. A small flowerpot containing Earl Grey chocolate mousse with raspberry preserve beneath a layer of chocolate mousse, topped with Peter Rabbit’s meringue radish. The mousse was soft and delicious, a highlight of the experience for her.

We shared Tom Kitten’s tangle, a ball of soft pink chocolate, which, when cut in half, revealed an elderflower mousse with a wild strawberry compote. This was a delightful, very light pastry.
We finished with Squirrel Nutkin’s harvest, a small chocolate nut with a spiced parsnip-cake interior filled with mascarpone cream and lemon curd. We agreed it was the best combination of flavours for afternoon tea.

The Tales of Beatrix Potter™ afternoon tea at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House exceeded our expectations. The setting was serene and quiet, the service was impeccable, and the individual elements of the afternoon tea were creative and exceptional. For an elegant and leisurely afternoon tea in a top London hotel, this is one of the best. Why not treat yourself to this superb experience?
