Spa Break at Sopwell House

A Birthday in the Country – Sopwell House and Spa: We were delighted to be invited to review Sopwell House and Spa for a short break especially as it coincided with my birthday!  Sopwell House was built in the 17th century and is now used as an elegant hotel and has a spa facility for […]

London Boutique Hotel – Victory House, Leicester Square

A New London Boutique Hotel – Victory House, Leicester Square: One of my favourite luxury hotel groups, Sofitel, has a boutique range that with my love of smaller, quirky hotels I’m amazed I had never heard of.  In fairness, Victory House only opened a couple of months ago – and it’s the first MGallery hotel […]

Living the Dream with The Royalton St Lucia

Living the Dream with The Royalton St Lucia

A Diamond Affair at The Royalton St Lucia: The concept of an all-inclusive resort like the recently opened Royalton on St Lucia is both amazing and terrifying for me.  As an independent traveller for most of my life, I’m used to planning my itinerary, finding the best restaurants to visit, working out the tours and […]

Why You Should Take a Short Break at The Shangri-La Doha Qatar

Ultra Luxury Short Break at the Shangri-La Doha Doha, the capital of Qatar, is known as a stopping point for many long-haul flights, especially those to Australia, but not many think of Doha as a short break destination in itself. So when I got the chance to stop over in Doha for a weekend I […]

Dune Bashing, Souqs and Sunsets in Doha, Qatar

Stopover Short Break in Doha, Qatar: Obviously, the only civilized thing to do first thing on a Sunday Morning in Doha is to have breakfast at the Shangri-la Doha Horizon Club lounge on the 43rd floor. With 6 lifts in the hotel, there is never a wait and I arrive relaxed and raring to start […]

First Impressions of Qatar

First Impressions of Qatar

Qatar – Arabic Culture Swathed in Luxury: The Horizon Club room at the Shangri-La Hotel Doha, Qatar has probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.  Looking out through the floor to ceiling windows I could happily have laid there a while to enjoy it; But not today as we were off for […]

Northcote Manor Devon

Northcote Manor Devon

In Tarka Land with not an Otter in Sight: Do you remember the film ‘A Ring of Bright Water’?  I do – and as a child, watching otters in the wild in Somerset when I was walking with my Grandfather.  These days I suspect otter spotting is a rarer occurrence, but the Tarka Line still […]

Langham London – Festive Afternoon Tea 2017

It’s feeling a lot like Christmas at The Langham London: There’s nothing quite like a festive afternoon tea to start getting me into the mood for Christmas.  Particularly when it happens to be at The Langham, London in the elegant Palm Court.  Sitting with a glass of Perrier Jouët Champagne in hand, we were really […]

THE Park Hotels – A little bit of England in the heart of India.

THE Park Hotels – A little bit of England in the heart of India.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of THE Park Hotels It is said that when the British left India, nobody told Calcutta. Flying in from Mumbai, over the bright orange, blue and yellow painted houses that hug the perimeter of the airport, flanked by the marshes of the Bengal delta, I wasn’t certain what to expect. This […]

  • April 12th  - National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

The USA celebrates National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12th.   Well, why not?   Regarded as one of the top comfort foods in America, the version we eat today originated in the 1920s when sliced bread and American cheese became easily available.

    image

Of course, those of you from the USA and those of you wishing to join the celebrations can do so in London!  Head for the glamorous art-deco inspired Colony Grill at the Beaumont Hotel and you’ll find the menu offers a Grilled Cheese sandwich with Dill Pickle, perfect for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.  While you are there, enjoy a cocktail or three - and perhaps a couple of other American classics - we love the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and perhaps Bananas Foster flambeed in dark rum for dessert.

    Enjoy!
