Sunday Brunch – Andaz Liverpool Street:
Over the past couple of years, there seems to have been an explosion of bars and restaurants catching onto the great American idea of the Sunday Brunch. One of the latest to do so is the Andaz Hotel at Liverpool Street, who’ve recently started serving it in their Eastway brasserie.

We’d had a quiet weekend, so going out on Sunday was a lovely treat. We weren’t quite up to attending the yoga class held in the atmospheric Masonic Temple within the hotel before brunch, although this seemed to be very popular.
The ethos at Eastway is that brunch is for sharing with your friends, so the price per person (£28) includes all the starters for the table to share and 1 main per person. It also includes as many helpings of bread, pastries, fruit, biscuits, and desserts as you want. The display of these as we walked to our table was mouth-watering, and clearly all individually made.

For an additional £18, you can go bottomless, this includes the Ketel One cocktail of the week (this week it was coffee, Ketel One and tonic, which was rather like a long espresso martini), mimosas, wine, beer, mocktails, soft drinks and tea or coffee. It was nice to see that a local brewery was supplying the beer choices and that the brasserie is plastic straw free.

Or you can visit the Bloody Mary bar, choose an infused vodka, and garnish your drink to your heart’s content.

There are 6 starters on the menu, 3 of which would be suitable for vegetarians.

The Greek yoghurt with the orange poached rhubarb and granola was my favourite of the starters.

Although the sweetcorn fritters with soft boiled egg and crumbled feta had a nice kick from the chilli flakes, so came a close second.

I don’t think that I’ve come across arancini on a brunch menu before, but it’s a rather inspired choice. The spicy sausage inside the arancini was a lovely twist, and the mozzarella had reached that lovely point of gooeyness when I cut into the arancini. A perfect hangover dish!

I have to say that by this point I was full, and could have happily stopped eating. But, we still had mains to come (and don’t forget those cakes!). When I was ordering it had seemed like a good idea to opt for the BBQ duck hash consisting of confit duck, potatoes, bbq spice and a chilli fried egg. What the menu didn’t say was that it came with not 1, but 2 eggs, and a large slice of toast. It was a really hearty dish, and I’m sorry that I couldn’t do justice to it, I think I managed about a 5th.

The mighty burger that arrived for Alex looked amazing; the burger, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles all contained within the burger bun. I did wonder how he was going to eat it, but it didn’t seem to be a problem!

The range of desserts and cakes on offer was fabulous; carrot cake, pistachio cake, victoria sponge, tiramisu, sacher torte, fruit tart, meringues, homemade biscuits and more. These were all available on a slice your own basis, so you could have as much or a little as you wanted. They were all certainly very tempting.

If you are tempted to try the brunch at Eastway, I suggest that you make sure that you are very, very hungry!
