Stylish understated restaurant
4.0 out of 5.0 starsUnderstated yet stylish, the restaurant at the Dean Street Townhouse, part of the Soho House Group, is the place to go to in Central London for a relaxing Sunday Roast.

Sunday has traditionally always been the day for families to get together, and a roast is usually on the menu. The restaurant with its own entrance on Dean Street is situated within what was originally two Georgian Townhouses in the heart of London’s Soho. The Soho House Group boasts a large collection of art some of which is in evidence on the walls. A huge bar runs the length of the room with the seating area divided into two with the far side having more comfy seating and being more secluded. Tables at the front look out discreetly onto the terrace and street.

One of the house’s specialities and a drink that goes well as an aperitif to a roast is a Bloody Mary – vodka served in a long glass, topped up with spicy tomato juice and a stick of celery. Our waiter made it an art form coming to the table with a trolley and mixing the drink in front of us.
Anticipating a large main course, we started with Norfolk asparagus served with vinaigrette on the side in preference, and another choice, to warm hollandaise sauce.
Mains were a choice of Black Angus sirloin, Norfolk chicken or rare breed pork belly. Celeriac and artichoke pithivier completed the vegetarian option.

My guest chose the sirloin which came thinly sliced with a large Yorkshire pudding, and horseradish on the side. I picked the pork belly which similarly came thinly sliced with a delicious thin crust of crackling. Although we were given sharp knives to cut the meat, neither of us needed it. To this we heaped on crispy roast potatoes and a medley of seasonal vegetables which included peas, long-stem broccoli, greens and cabbage topped with lashings of gravy. Extras included pigs in blankets (bacon wrapped around a mini sausage) and braised red cabbage.

As we came in, Julia noticed a waiter serving one of her favourite desserts, apple and rhubarb crumble served with lots of velvety warm custard. I was tempted by the chocolate cheesecake with caramelised orange sorbet but having eaten such a large main course, we opted to share the very fruity crumble, a ‘Special’ not on the menu.
The Sunday Roast menu also includes other choices from an all-day breakfast to salads and small bites. My dining companion was celebrating a birthday, and a roast was her meal of choice. Although this was the first time either of us had visited, the excellent service and the way we were looked after made us feel that we had chosen wisely.
Only service dogs are allowed in the restaurant, but as dog owners, we were delighted to learn that for a future occasion, animals are permitted outside at one of the tables on the terrace.

Worth noting that the restaurant is located within the 39-bedroom Dean Street Townhouse, which is part of the Soho House Group. Although a member’s club, their hotel is open to anyone who would like to stay.
