Wines to Drink Now Through To Summer

With the glorious stretch of weather we have been having in the UK, it feels as if it is time to discard the heavy red and full-bodied white wines that have sustained us through the cold winter months, with wines for Spring that are fresher with a bit of a zing.

White wines from Majestic - Wines for Spring

We are going to start with 3 wines for spring that are available through Majestic.

La Belle Angèle Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (RRP: £9.00 or £7.50 mix six) is a well-priced classic French Sauvignon with a gorgeous label conjuring up the image of Angèle, a spirited young artist’s muse from the turn of the 20th century. The wine is imbued with the classic Sauvignon flavour profile of green apples, gooseberries, and citrus, but still has a smoothness that makes it very easy to drink. Try it on its own or with goat’s cheese or seafood, we loved it with a creamy fish pie!

Abbotts & Delaunay ‘Les Fleurs Sauvages’ Pays d’Oc, Viognier 2023  (RRP: £11.00 or mix six £9.00) is an intensely flavoured single-varietal Viognier from the Hérault and the Aude Valley in the South of the Minervois. With peach, cream, and melon notes and a hint of spice, it will enliven a roast chicken and can stand up to spicy food such as the Pad Thai we enjoyed with it.

Sometimes only a bottle of fizz will do, but you don’t always want the expense of champagne. This Spanish Cune Cava Brut NV (RRP: £13.00 or mix six £10.00) is made using the ‘traditional method’. With a crisp, mild tartness creating a fresh mouth feel, and flavours of red apples and brioche, it’s just the job for an early summer celebration.

Wines for Spring and Summer - reds and rosé wines

Moving away from white wines, Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages ‘Combe aux Jacques’ 2023, Beaujolais-Villages AOC, France (RRP £13 from Tesco) is the UK’s best-selling Beaujolais-Villages from Louis Jadot, the super-reliable French producer who really knows how to give their customers a vinous bang per buck. Bursting with blackberries, this Beaujolais makes for easy drinking, and in this weather, it will benefit from an hour in the fridge.

Another solid producer is Villa Maria from New Zealand. Their Blush Sauvignon 2023 (on special offer at £7.67 from Asda) gets its pinkness from a drop of Merlot and is the perfect summer pour. With passionfruit and cranberry to the fore, it’s perfect as an aperitif.

From France, the T&T Collin Bourriset Fleurie 2023 (RRP £14.00 from Coop stores) is a heady mix
of spring flower and forest fruit aromas. Made from the same Gamay grape as Beaujolais, this
delicious wine has well-balanced tannins – try it with roast lamb or pork.

Delaunay Chardonnays

Finally, we have a tale of two French Chardonnays. The Abbotts Delaunay Les Fruits Sauvages Pays d’Oc 2023 (RRP: £11.00 or £10.00 mix six from Majestic) is made by 6th-generation Burgundian winemaker Jeanne Delaunay in the Languedoc. Wonderful with all fish or lighter chicken dishes, the wine is buttery and imbued with crisp green apple notes.

Laurent Delaunay (only a 5th generation Burgundian winemaker!) has made his Chablis Les Grappillages (RRP: £18.00 from Morrisons) a classic take on a Chablis. It has a cool, flinty minerality, typical of the wines from the Yonne with its Kimmeridgian limestone soil. Try it with ceviche, sashimi or sushi or a goats cheese.

Let us know what you think of our picks of wines for spring and tell us if you have any suggestions for the summer. Happy drinking!
