Boutique hotel in the elegant 16th arrondissement
Located in the Auteuil quarter in the heart of Paris’ 16th Arrondissement, Hotel Noucha is a four-star, boutique hotel on a quiet street that has an important architectural history. Its 27 elegant rooms sport gorgeous fabrics and vintage furniture, and the hotel has an inviting rooftop terrace in addition to private balconies on the upper floors. Much quieter than the tourist-filled areas in central Paris, yet easily accessible on public transport, Hotel Noucha is a home-from-home in a well-heeled residential neighbourhood, ideally located for the plethora of museums and key sights in the 16th arrondissement.

I was visiting Paris for the David Hockney exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, which is on the outskirts of the city. I always visit the Frank Gehry-designed museum when I am in Paris, as it consistently hosts exciting retrospectives in its contemporary setting. It takes some time to reach the museum from the inner arrondissements, but from Hotel Noucha, I hailed an Uber and was at the entrance within 10 minutes. Leaving the museum at 7 pm, I caught a bus nearby and arrived in good time for my dinner reservation, also in the 16th. With a view of the Eiffel Tower and a 40-minute post-prandial walk to the hotel along the Seine and the quiet, leafy streets of the 16th arrondissement, I reflected on how vast this neighbourhood is, with so much to explore and enjoy, using Hotel Noucha as a base.

Invited to review Hotel Noucha, I was delighted to be shown up to the Junior Suite, which had a wrap-around terrace with views over the two adjoining streets. Parisian hotel bedrooms are notoriously bijoux, but this one was a good size.

The décor was elegant and understated and full of little surprises. My favourite was the headboard, the fabric of which became a small canopy – a contemporary nod to the four-poster. Original artworks and attractive wooden furniture created a mid-century feel. The large bed was super comfy, and I managed an excellent sleep. I loved the bathroom with its romantic, roll-top bath as well as a rain shower filled with products from Parisian luxury brand, Lola James Harper.

Hotel Noucha has a cocktail bar and an in-house restaurant, which was closed during our visit in August – this is very common in France, where many eateries take a well-deserved rest. There are so many restaurants in the area for all budgets, so wherever you choose to visit, you will eat well. We were warmly welcomed to breakfast in the hotel, which set us up nicely for a day of sightseeing. Sitting at a small café table overlooking the street, we had a choice of the continental style, Parisian Breakfast (12 euros), or the à la carte (23 euros), which included a buffet selection of breads and homemade jam, cakes, viennoiserie, fresh fruit, crepes, and cereals. Along with this, one could order eggs or smoked salmon, or cheese and charcuterie from the savoury menu, as well as an item from the sweet menu that included granola and fresh fruit salad. I enjoyed a herb omelette as well as granola with fromage blanc. Good tea, coffee, and detox juices were much appreciated early in the morning.

After breakfast, I explored the Art Nouveau buildings further along Rue Jean de la Fontaine. The first Paris residence built in this style was erected at number 14 between 1895 and 1898. At that time, this area was still relatively rural, and there was space for expansion and innovation, away from the Haussmannian influence in central Paris. Castel Béranger won the architect, Hector Guimard, an award for the most beautiful and original new building façade in the 16th arrondissement. He went on to design some of the iconic Art Nouveau metro stations, which are still to be found in the area. Other buildings designed by Guimard and his colleagues are to be found along Rue Jean de la Fontaine and the adjacent streets, all a short walk from Hotel Noucha. I recalled having been on a specialist walking tour of this very area decades ago, and this would make a wonderful excursion for guests of Hotel Noucha who are interested in Art Nouveau architecture. Le Corbusier is another architectural master whose work can be admired and visited just a stone’s throw from Hotel Noucha. This modernist architect designed two terraced houses in the area, which are fascinating to explore.

If you are visiting Paris with kids, they will be thrilled to see the Jardin d’Acclimatation, an amusement park alongside the Louis Vuitton Foundation. The 16th arrondissement is also home to some terrific must-see sights, including the Eiffel Tower. Monet enthusiasts will love the Musée Monet Marmottan, and art devotees can enjoy the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and the Palais de Tokyo. There are also smaller museums such as the Maison de Balzac. When you have had your fill of culture, stroll along the lake in the Bois de Boulogne, where a small ferry will transport you over the water to the Alpine Chalet-des-isles, where you can have a romantic sundowner or stay for a meal in the restaurant. It is bliss on a summer’s day. Once you have explored the range of experiences in the 16th arrondissement, you will realise that the area is one of the gems of Paris. Staying at Hotel Noucha means that all this and more is on your doorstep.
