The Peninsula London’s elegant Afternoon Tea

The spacious lobby at the luxurious Peninsula London Hotel is the perfect location for an exquisite afternoon tea. Handily situated in the heart of London, near Hyde Park in Belgravia, this modern luxury hotel offers an exceptional dining experience.

The airy lobby with its stunning chandeliers is flooded with light. Comfortable seating provides the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a luxury afternoon tea.

Attentive waiting staff are on hand offering hot flannels to cleanse and refresh your hands. Tea is poured into stylish China teacups. Why not choose a glass of Coates & Seely English sparkling brut or the Peninsula’s Deutz Cuvée champagne to add a special touch to the signature afternoon tea? The list of teas available includes white tea, black tea, green tea, Oolong tea and Pu-Erh tea.

The amuse bouche arrives on a quaint china stand. These tiny bites of a tomato gazpacho sphere, together with an onion chutney and lemon verbena tart, start the tea off in style.

A plate of enticing finger sandwiches follows as the savoury element. A delicious sandwich of beef bresaola with rocket on wholemeal bread, moist roast chicken with sweetcorn and sorrel on granary bread, smoked salmon with a touch of dill and horseradish, egg mayonnaise with watercress and baby cucumber with mint and cream cheese. All of the sandwiches are freshly made with top-quality ingredients.

The sweet elements of the tea are beautifully presented on a stylish stand. Warm raisin and plain scones wrapped in napkins to retain the heat, accompanied by little pots of lemon curd, strawberry jam and clotted cream. The scones are the perfect size and delicious.

The patisserie cakes are delicate and appealing, they are so stylish that it seems a shame to bite into them.

The peach flower, peach mousse, and peach and apple compote on sablé is a work of art with a delicate peach note.  

The berry pavlova, a light and delicious meringue with berry confit, chocolate crunch and berry ganache, is exceptional.

The apricot and pistachio cake is a moist and delightful combination of apricot and pistachio.

A miniature tart of mango, coconut and passionfruit completes the sweet section of the tea.

We enjoyed the Peninsula London Afternoon Tea as part of the Peninsula Academy Discover Apsley House experience. This unique experience, offered to guests staying at the Peninsula London Hotel, starts with a private tour of Number One London, Aspley House, with the curator. 

Apsley House, also known as Number One London, is one of London’s historic buildings. It was bought by the first Duke of Wellington after his defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Now, an English Heritage building, the current eighth Duke of Wellington, still has private apartments on the top floor that he uses when he sits in the House of Lords.

The guided tour includes highlights of the contents of the house, from collections owned by the Duke of Wellington. The Museum Room on the ground floor houses an impressive collection of porcelain services, gifts to the Duke of Wellington, as well as the ornate Wellington Shield presented to the Duke of Wellington by the merchants and bankers of the City of London.

An immense statue of Napoleon stands by the staircase leading to the upper floors. The second floor contains the Duke of Wellington’s collection of Dutch paintings and the banquet room where the Portuguese silver service, a beautiful centrepiece, is displayed on the table.

The gallery, a later addition to Apsley House, is a stunning space with numerous paintings adorning the walls.

The private guided tour offers a peek behind the scenes to view items not currently on display, for example, Napoleon’s death mask.
