Casino Royale: James Bond Eat Your Heart Out

I’ve always had this image of casinos being all about glitz and glam, like something straight out of a James Bond movie. But not being a gambler I’ve never really had the opportunity to explore one myself. So, when I was invited to check out the new ‘Grille’ restaurant at Metropolitan Mayfair, I jumped at the chance.

Metropolitan Mayfair Casino exterior

The recently opened luxurious Metropolitan Mayfair, with its entrance illuminated by neon lights, is nestled in Mayfair’s iconic casino district on Old Park Lane. Our visit coincided with Ramadan, resulting in a quieter ambience than usual, which meant a delightful receptionist had the time to show us around before escorting us to our seats in the restaurant.

We took the lift to the gaming club lounge, and it was just as glamorous and swish as I had imagined. Spread over a large space, it gave a contemporary twist to the classic casino décor, with opulent touches throughout creating a unique and luxurious vibe.

Marble floors, plush red carpets, crimson leather armchairs, gold fittings, glossy gaming tables, modern artwork and crystal chandeliers adorned the space, and a glistening bar took centre stage. Additionally, there is an outdoor covered gaming area and private rooms which are available for booking.

The ‘Grille’ restaurant is separated by an art deco-inspired crystal bead curtain- complete with decadent crushed velvet burnt orange banquets and sexy smoked mirror panelling.

In the kitchen Chef Tim Tolley takes the culinary lead, bringing over two decades of expertise from NYC and London’s top culinary scenes from Jean-Georges Vongerichten to D&D restaurant group.

We were looked after by Manager Roberto and his charming team of staff, who provided exceptional service with real attention to detail throughout our meal, making our evening more enjoyable.

Metropolitan Mayfair Grille Martinis

First, we browsed the specially curated cocktail menu, but in keeping with my 007 fantasy, I felt vodka martinis, shaken not stirred, were a must.  And for the table a side of olives and a selection of fresh bread, that was so good, that it took more willpower than I care to mention not to eat the whole lot and leave no room for the meal to come.

We started our meal with pan-fried scallops, cooked to perfection, bathed in a lush and creamy Jerusalem artichoke purée and an elegant champagne sauce…a wonderful combination of sweet and smoky flavours.

The premium quality smoked salmon was absolutely delicious, expertly sliced at our table and served with a selection of capers, onions, and parsley…a lovely added touch.

We paired our meal with a bottle of Sancerre Blanc Grande Cuvée, 2014 – rich and complex, with fruit and earthy elements and sunshine on the tip, the ideal accompaniment to both of our meat and fish main courses.

Ribeye Steak

From the Robata grill, my companion indulged in a succulent ribeye steak, savouring its robust flavour alongside grilled pickled oyster mushrooms, sweet cherry tomatoes, and shallots.

Dover Sole

I luxuriated in the delicate texture and subtle taste of South Coast Dover Sole, which was carefully filleted for me on request.

Chocolate brownie

For dessert, we enjoyed a decadent warm Valrhona chocolate brownie topped with creamy vanilla ice cream and a passion fruit posset nestled within an edible chocolate pot and served with delicate shortbread and fresh strawberries, culminating our meal on a sweet and satisfying note.

What a fabulous dining experience, highlighted by impeccable service and excellent food. The night was still young, and had I not had to be up bright and early next morning we might have continued our evening with a night of entertainment at the luxurious Mayfair casino.
