A new star is shining brightly in Wimbledon Village’s restaurant constellation. Orion, by Master Chef – The Professionals Winner, Alex Webb, has opened its doors, offering dishes to delight.

5.0 out of 5.0 stars

Bringing his experience of working in some of the best West End restaurants, including time with Héléne Darroze at The Connaught, classically trained, Master Chef – The Professionals Winner, Alex Webb has opened his first restaurant, creating a relaxed dining experience equally suited to celebration or snacking.

With a fresh, contemporary ambience, Orion is designed to attract drop-in business to the bar area for signature cocktails and snacks whilst the spacious restaurant, complete with a seafood and fish counter, open kitchen and private dining area, offers the opportunity to lunch or dine in the style you prefer, whatever the occasion.

Webb describes Orion as offering “British/French sharing style..seafood led,” sourcing as much as possible locally with meat from Wimbledon’s local butcher, fish from Cornwall, and scallops from Orkney (when the weather allows). The menu, built around seasonal British produce, features a fish of the day, fish and meat plates to share, a range of excellently executed main courses, sides and small plates all guaranteed to deliver some superb taste sensations.

As a new venture, there’s a palpable excitement in the air as you’re warmly welcomed into Orion by its keen and friendly young team. Caught up with the atmosphere, we ordered cocktails and were very pleased we did. Orion’s Bloody Good Mary was divine, with a spiced tomato consommé creating a light, refreshing drink which could potentially be drunk by the pitcher on a warm summer’s day.

Old Fashioned cocktail arrives theatrically in a smoking cloche at Orion by Alex Webb.

My guest’s Smoked Old Fashion was warming with hints of apple and citrus and was served theatrically in a smoke-filled cloche. Alongside, we enjoyed an amuse-bouche of cheesy doughnuts served with a 24-month aged compté sauce. An excellent foretaste of what was to come.

Three starter plates of cured salmon, lobster toast and a scallop at Orion by Alex Webb

From the small plates, a whole-baked scallop served in the shell with a crispy bacon crumb, pickled onion, salsa verde and wildflowers was a taste revelation and left me wanting to recreate that specific combination of flavours at home. A generous plate of salmon perfectly cured with cranberry and dill, served with a cranberry gel, a delicate orange and fennel salad, and onion oil, was a lesson in how fantastic this dish can taste. We indulged in a third small plate, Alex’s signature lobster and prawn toast featuring black sesame, lime, chilli and carrot puree. These dainty doorsteps started as an end-of-shift treat for the kitchen team and are on the menu because they are delicious and need to be experienced!

A main course dish of cod fillet wrapped in hispi cabbage with kohlrabi scales and a cassoulet at Orion by Alex Webb

Moving on to larger plates, the cod fillet wrapped in hispi cabbage and plated with pickled kohlrabi “scales,” a white bean cassoulet with a zesty lemon kick and a drizzle of dill oil was as pretty as a picture and satisfyingly flavoursome to boot.

Main course dish of short rib beef with carrot and an endive salad at Orion by Alex Webb

For team beef, the slow-cooked short rib proved elegant as well as hearty. Already partnered perfectly with a roasted sand carrot and carrot purée, the additional endive and wholegrain mustard salad added crisp interest, and with a beef jus, this lovely combination of flavours managed to cover both rich and refreshing on the same plate. We sampled Alex’s signature slow-cooked butter thyme potatoes, Parmesan, and the mixed wild greens with house dressing; both side dishes would form the perfect accompaniment to a meat or fish sharing platter.

A dessert plate of Alex Webb's take on a Twix at Orion restaurant.

At Orion, dessert is termed “Fun stuff” and there’s a happy twist to all the dishes. Alex’s take on a Twix involves tonka bean shortbread, salted caramel, super-rich dark chocolate, crème fraiche and ice cream – quite something! There’s also a super-luxurious take on a black forest gateau: Chocolate & Cherry Gateau with chocolate crémeux, a flourless chocolate sponge, poached cherry, cherry gel, cherry sorbet and candy floss. Flourless, flawless and a lot of fun.

Alex Webb has brought a new and welcome dining experience to Wimbledon. With its combination of a well-balanced, well-priced and well-executed menu, Orion will prove particularly popular, with locals (the 2025 New Year’s Eve sitting sold out within three hours), but it won’t be long before diners beyond this universe head for this stellar restaurant!

You’ll find Orion in Wimbledon Village at 75-77 Ridgway, London SW19 4ST, UK.
