Chilling at Pantechnicon

In the heart of Belgravia, the six-storey Pantechnicon offers Nordic and Japanese retail and eateries including a roof garden, café, whiskey tasting and a five-course culinary experience in a Nordic dining room. For this summer, Pantechnicon has boosted its wide range of offerings to visitors by opening the Roku Gin Summer Terrace. Designed with reference to the graphic design of Japanese artist Ikko Tanaka, the terrace incorporates bold, geometric styles with modernism and tradition to create a relaxed and informal space to enjoy the exciting menu of Japanese-inspired cocktails and light bites.

The terrace aims to provide guests with a taste of Japan through its Kakigori on a curated menu. Typically a Japanese shaved ice dessert, the Roku Gin Summer Terrace has reinterpreted Kakigori to create a range of flavoured shaved ice Roku cocktails. The results are Roku shaved-ice gin cocktails which are as tasty as their striking appearance. The Roku cocktails contain a selection of the brand’s six signature botanicals, created from ingredients harvested at the peak of each season.

Following our order, we watched as staff raised an impressively large ice cube into the specialised ice machine which rotated the cube and shaved off the ice which settled over the cocktail already prepared in the glass. The result is a cocktail unlike any I have had before – and requires a spoon to eat!

The Kakigori slated yuzu, comprised of Roku gin, yuzu sake, honey and salt, was cold and refreshing not just from the ice but also from the citrusy flavour of the yuzu sake. The gin and the yuzu sake contrasted well, as did the sweet notes from the honey and the salt. Other options on the Kakigori menu include Darjeeling and strawberry and melon and matcha. For those who prefer a non-alcoholic option, Kakigori can also be ordered in strawberry or watermelon flavours.

We also enjoyed the watermelon and shiso cocktail, made up of Haku vodka, watermelon, rose water and Japanese tonic. The cocktail was light, sweet and had subtle notes from the rose water and watermelon. Other cocktails available include the enticing Japanese G&T made from Roku gin, shiso and Japanese tonic, and umami hi, with Toki whiskey, ponzu, myoga and soda.

Pantechnicon has also provided their expert chefs to create an excellent range of light bites to complement their drinks menu. The food menu is based on Japanese street food such as octopus Takoyaki, which is a handmade, ball-shaped Japanese snack which is prepared similarly to a small round pancake and bears an appearance similar to the Dutch Poffertjes. The octopus Takoyaki was delicious and smartly presented, with fish flakes scattered on top offering additional flavour. A Veganyaki is also available, prepared with kimchi and vegan cheese. Both were excellent and freshly prepared, with six balls in each serving. For dessert, visitors can further enjoy the unique yuzu flavour from the Yuzuyaki, made with cardamom, yuzu curd, strawberry and kinako.
