Snowday in Brooklyn, West London

Sunday in Brooklyn hails from Williamsburg, New York, a popular brunch spot founded by Todd Enany, Adam Landsman, and chef Jaime Young in 2016.  Then, they journeyed across the pond in 2021 to set up shop in London’s leafy Notting Hill on Westbourne Grove. Sunday in Brooklyn is now providing West Londoners with brunch, lunch and dinner, serving a selection of classic American dishes with a playful twist.

This Christmas they have created a cosy winter wonderland scene, named Snowday in Brooklyn. We arrived on a frosty winter’s evening and were met with a wonderful festive feast for the eyes. Outside is a stripey green and white awning and tables for those prepared brave the cold, the entrance is framed in a red and white floral arrangement and inside a large central hanging feature draped in sparkly white baubles and greenery.

The stainless-steel bar is embellished with white tinsel with a cute polar bear sitting at the end, there are twinkling fairy lights throughout and a snow mural on the wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows which by day give an abundance of natural light. The spacious restaurant has an inviting feel to it, with vibrant music playing and a large blond wood central sharing table as well as smaller white marble ones and with attractive banquettes adorned with welcoming sheepskin throws.  The restaurant is set over two floors with a basement and areas for private dining too. When we arrived it was already filled with a happy buzzing crowd and for the first time, I began to feel very Christmassy.

I chose the ‘Partridge in a Pear Tree’, a very pretty cocktail served in an elegant glass bird with sprouting leaves – a well-balanced but heady mix of Reposado tequila, sherry, pear, grapefruit celery root with cardamom bitters.

My friend’s ‘Dude, Where’s my Sled’ arrived in a Christmas bauble, a fruity, sweet and sour combo of warming Cacao rum, barley Shochu, tomato, strawberry and tonka bean with a vegetal kick. We also tried the Snowman’s Land – served in an irresistibly cheeky ceramic snowman – with gin cachaca, macadamia, passion fruit, apricot and cumin curry leaf which added an unusual spice.

SnowmanTo start, we delved into a selection of dishes – ceviche with tender sliced seabass, soaked in warmly spiced tiger milk. We loved Ofira’s pita and hummus served with wonderfully soft and doughy bread and a nutty pistachio tahini hummus, creamy seasoned sumac yoghurt, and a kebab of tender grilled baby beets. The hot and sticky fried chicken bites came in a gochujang sauce, bold and sweet with umami flavours.

We browsed the interesting wine list which offers a good selection of natural wines from all over Europe. We chose a Garnacha Blanca Spain, Laia Garnacha Blanco Aroa 2020 – fresh and citrussy with notes of tropical fruits.

There’s nothing restrained about the food at Sunday in Brooklyn, generous, hearty American dishes with a fun spin. For mains we dug into half a smoked chicken served with crisp Sunday Fries, this was beautifully tender and encrusted with earthy herbs, and a delicious heart-warming bowl of slow-cooked, pressed lamb shoulder with braised chickpeas, fresh goats curd with a bright and tangy Salsa Verde…the perfect winter fare.

On the side a market salad, a bowl full of goodness with seasonal veggies, chickpeas, soft-boiled egg, feta and croutons. Other options include classic burgers, a crispy chicken sandwich and a vegan roasted cauliflower melt.

Now there genuinely was no need for pudding after such a waistband-bursting meal, even so, it was tempting to tuck into a traditional apple crumble or a Sunday Sundae but instead, we opted for the lighter soft serve salted caramel and apple ice cream topped with crumbled peanuts which was truly scrumptious!

Sunday in Brooklyn sure knows how to put you in the Christmas spirit so do try and catch the festive grotto before it goes. I know I’m keen to try their brunch, especially their famed stacks of fluffy pancakes served with brown butter and hazelnut maple praline, so I might be back soon to visit this friendly neighbourhood restaurant.
