Anyone for ‘Posh’ Fish and Chips?
4.3 out of 5.0 starsVisiting Knightsbridge for fish and chips may not be the most obvious thing to do for the average Londoner. It’s where we go for a bit of high-end retail therapy at Harrods or Harvey Nichols. When we were invited to review the Knightsbridge branch of The Mayfair Chippy, the other one is in Mayfair, I was curious to see if the deep fat fryer had found its spiritual home in the land of designer labels.

The Mayfair Chippy Knightsbridge sits nestled on the Old Brompton Road, just a stone’s throw from Harrods. We went for lunch on a Thursday lunchtime, and the place was buzzing, full of happy diners, many of whom were experiencing the joyous combination of fried carbs and protein for the first time.

The restaurant is on two levels. On the ground floor, there is a table, a counter and booth dining with blue banquettes. Booths and marble tables populate the raised first floor, which is illuminated by a large skylight, creating a light, airy feel with plenty of greenery and attractive pescatarian tiling that add to the atmosphere.

The menu is substantial and includes a few surprises, so we needed a couple of glasses of fizz to develop a luncheon strategy. What better than a glass of something sparkling from Kent? Balfour Leslie’s Sparkling Rose from England has herbal and red-fruit notes and is the perfect aperitif. Or for a French touch, Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee Brut NV, France, is an old favourite, easy-drinking, with honeysuckle, peach, and brioche notes.

If you’re feeling particularly posh, The Mayfair Chippy has caviar, crab and Carlingford oysters on the menu. But we choose from the Snacks and Small Plates for our starters. Cornish Salt and Pepper Squid features crisp, hand-cut strips of squid, sizzling from the fryer. With chilli, lime and ginger, the squid zinged with flavour.

I was intrigued when I saw the Kedgeree Scotch Egg on the menu. This delicious ovoid was a cross between a Scotch egg and an arancini. The encased golden egg is coated with a layer of smoky kedgeree, and unexpected curried mayonnaise adds a lovely retro twist.

From the Mayfair Classics section of the menu, we ordered fried haddock (there is also a hake option) with chips, mushy peas, homemade tartar sauce, and either chip shop curry sauce or HP gravy. The hefty portion of fish is attractively served in a rectangular fish-fryer basket. With a light batter and beautifully cooked, it comes with fluffy yet crisp chips and the pleasing tamarind tang of hot HP sauce, something I’ve never tried before and would happily repeat. The Mayfair Chippy can also knock out vegetarian and vegan versions of the dish, and for dedicated meatheads, there is a Shepherd’s Pie.

From the Sandwiches selection, we nearly went for the Soft Shell Crab Burger with Sriracha mayonnaise and Mayfair slaw, but eventually opted for the Lobster and Crayfish Roll. It’s a light, toasted brioche sandwich stuffed with a tasty seafood filling, served with chips and garnished with Mary Rose sauce, pickles, and a top-notch lemon-and-garlic mayonnaise on the side. Perfect as a lighter option.
There is a long list of optional sides. Loaded Chips with Truffle and Berkswell cheese looked very appealing, as did the Mayfair Slaw. If you’re really brave, a Battered Wally – a deep-fried gherkin in batter – might fit the bill.

I’m a huge fan of mini desserts. Amid the uncertainty the world faces at the moment, they offer a beacon of hope and comfort. The Mayfair Chippy has a choice of 3 mini puddings. We shared a nicely eggy Valrhona Milk Chocolate Mousse, a lovely hot Glazed Lemon Tart and a freshly made Classic Sherry Trifle.

If you’re a couple in the mood for a Valentine’s treat, then Mayfair Chippy is offering dedicated Valentine’s specials available across both Mayfair and Knightsbridge locations from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th February. The Mayfair Chippy’s sharing Lobster Fish Pie is described as ‘a decadent and hearty dish’, and the Afternoon ‘Sea’ for Two is ‘a maritime take on a classic Afternoon tea.’
The Mayfair Chippy in Knightsbridge this Valentine’s Day is offering a handful of couples the chance to dine in its ‘Lobster Pot’ booth. Decorated with nautical nets, dangling gold lobsters and napkins courtesy of designer Lottie Day, you’ll be whisked away from the London grey to a faraway shore. How romantic!
The Mayfair Chippy is perfect for tourists visiting London who want to pop into Harrods and enjoy a top-quality fish-and-chip experience. But for those of us who call the city home, it offers a very different take on a visit to the ‘chippy’ that I, for one, really enjoyed, and you might too.
