French Decadence in Bloomsbury at Amelie’s Wine House

Nestled on Bloomsbury’s Store Street you’ll find Amelie’s Wine House. The wine shop and bar is a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street and London’s academic hub making it the perfect place for all occasions. The southern French décor, yellow walls and deep leather sofas make Amelie’s a cosy and inviting place to catch up, debrief and relax.

If you’re popping in pre-theatre, a glass starts from £5 however for those ready to settle in and share, Amelie’s offers half and whole bottles of reds, whites, rosés, and Champagnes. With a worldwide wine list, there is something for everyone. You can try a classic or even discover a new favourite and that’s exactly what we did!

Intrigued by a listing from China, we tried the 2013 ‘Pretty Pony’ from the Kanaan winery; it did not disappoint. We guarantee that you’ll be googling Chinese wines after trying this impressive red, redolent of blackberries and currants.

At Amelie’s Wine House you’ll also enjoy excellent quality cheese and seasonal charcuterie. Delightful to look at and delicious to eat, the sharing platters pair perfectly with the wines. Ours included columns of Comté, pecorino and wedges of Camembert, delish! For something smaller, check out the nibbles of nuts and olives starting from £3.50 and are a great light option if you prefer.   

 Soft drinks, spirits and beers are also available. However, it would be a shame to not try something from the extensive wine list. Especially with a knowledgeable and helpful in house sommelier to guide your choice. We finished our visit with a light, floral, sweet elixir – a glass of the 2019 Tokaji ‘Late Harvest’. It was expertly recommended, and another favourite was found!

Unlike other wine bars, Amelie’s Wine House boasts bottles of wine to take away allowing you to sip, then shop. Alternatively, with leafy Russell Square around the corner, a picnic in the park is a great option. Once students and office workers return to buzzing Bloomsbury, Amelie’s Wine House will become a local favourite for enjoying La Vie en Rosé.
