And, there was coffee and homemade chocolate truffles to finish.  At £86 pounds each, it seemed like good value – and we enjoyed a bottle of Corney & Barrow Blanc IGP Côtes de Gascogne, French Country, France, 2021 for a very reasonable £26.75.

The food and drink options at Garsington are quite broad – you can opt for afternoon tea or canapés before the opera in addition to a range of picnic hampers.  Wines are from Corney & Barrow while the champagne offered is the excellent Deutz, a choice that really does reflect what Garsington is to me.  It’s a fifth-generation champagne house from Ay, part of the region that is home to several other prestige champagne labels. You’ll find it in some of the top London hotels (the Ritz and the Savoy for starters).

And, if you are lucky you might be at the estate when some of the special venues are open.  We were extremely fortunate to catch a tour of The Library and the Grotto which are occasionally open to the public for guided tours.  If you get the chance to join a tour then drop everything and jump at the chance.  The compact library spreads over four floors, a specially commissioned building that was built as an extension of the main house when Sir Paul Getty moved to Garsington.  Having spent 25 years building the collection, visitors to Wormsley are invited to view this very special space where you’ll find the first edition of Caxton’s printing of The Canterbury Tales, Anne Boleyn’s Psalter and the first folio of Shakespeare’s “Comedies, Histories and Tragedies sitting alongside manuscripts dating back to the 12th century, bibles and some beautiful modern book.  It’s a space where everywhere you turn you’ll find something special.

The Grotto too, designed and built by Damien Hurst is a thrilling experience, a small cavernous room hand lined with amethyst crystals, with a glass ceiling featuring butterflies painted by Hurst himself and with Getty’s own ‘pills’ picture on display.  For just a few minutes you can imagine that you are the personal guest of Getty.

There are more examples of Damien Hurst’s artwork scattered around the estate, including a broken egg sculpture in the middle of the lake.  At times the experience really is one where you learn to ‘expect the unexpected’.  Garsington more than any other Country House Opera is somewhere to enjoy an exclusive and very special occasion.  So, whether you are already an opera fan or simply curious, we recommend a visit.
