Arancione Blood Orange Spritz from Hotel Starlino
There’s a very famous orange spritz that I first tried in what must have been one of the most fitting settings. Sitting on the rooftop of the Palladian Basilica sipping this brilliant orange drink as the sun set over the terracotta tiled houses and palaces of Vicenza was one of those moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life. While Starlino Arancione is similar in colour, it’s actually an easier drink on the palate, with softer and sweeter herbaceous notes. Perfect for making an Orange Vermouth Spritz. In summer a totally refreshing option. In winter, a burst of sunshine on a grey day.

What’s more, while it won’t fit into a completely ‘dry’ January, Arancione is low enough in alcohol at just 17% ABV that whether you make it into a spritz or serve it with tonic, it fits the bill of drinking in moderation.

I love the bottle itself, a heavy apothecary-style bottle that has a lovely ceramic and wooden stopper and an elegant vintage style label. It’s apparently known in Italy as Stile Liberty and is particularly famous in Torino where Hotel Starlino is based. Torino was the birthplace of Vermouth in the 18th century and Torino Distillati, owned by the Vergnano family has been producing vermouth for around 100 years. Hotel Starlino is the modern interpretation of this old classic. all the drinks come from the Vergnano family distillery and are produced by Master Distiller and Wine Maker, Beppe Ronco.
Of course, I had to make an Arancione Orange Spritz. The perfect pick me up after New Year’s Eve, it’s eminently drinkable – a really easy and light option when made with the ratio of 3 parts Arancione, 2 parts sparkling wine and one part soda water. I chilled all the ingredients before mixing and also used more or less half a glass of ice. If like me, you prefer lots of ice, then it’s really vital to make sure your Arancione, sparkling wine and soda are chilled as much as possible so that the ice doesn’t melt and dilute the drink.

Here’s the printable recipe if you want to make one (or more) at home.

Delicious Blood Orange Vermouth from Hotel Starlino is the base for this refreshing low alcohol drink
- 60 ml Hotel Starlino Arancino
- 40 ml Sparkling Wine
- 20 ml Soda Water
- Ice
-
Chill all the ingredients (except the ice) in the fridge for at least 3 hours
-
Half fill a large wine glass or Gin coupe with ice
-
Add the Hotel Starline Arancino and stir gently
-
Top up with sparkling wine and soda water.
-
Stir very gently and garnish with a slice of orange
Hotel Starlino Arancione is part of a range of Aperitivos and Vermouths including the delicious Starlino Rosé which we were lucky enough to try in the Summer when it made the perfect Aperitivo. There’s also Starlino Rosso, a classic sweet vermouth. Finally, there are truly delicious Maraschino cherries which make the perfect garnish for a whole range of cocktails – we’ve already included them in a Manhattan cocktail and in a delicious Tequila Old Fashioned.
We’ve got a great opportunity for one of you to win a bottle of Starlino Arancione. All you need to do is follow the rafflecopter through, remembering to answer the mandatory first question!
You can buy the Hotel Starlino range online from Amazon or Proof Drinks. And, for more inspiration, check their website or follow them on Instagram at @thestarlino
