Turning the Sea Breeze cocktail into a mocktail

One of my favourite make at home cocktails, the Sea Breeze works well with gin or vodka and a fruity combination of cranberry and grapefruit juice.  It works for me because served in a collins glass over ice, it’s light and refreshing and not overly sweet.  The new raft of non-alcoholic distilled spirits provides a great opportunity to turn this kind of drink into an even lighter experience and when I did the side by side tasting of some of the no alcohol or low alcohol gin substitutes, Pentire was one which I immediately wanted to mix into a Sea Breeze.  Maybe it is just the psychology of tasting an artisan drink made on the North Cornish Coast, with botanicals unique to that part of the country.  Pentire to me does evoke walks across The Rumps, sea breezes, blue skies and a Cornish summer.  And, that’s the part of Cornwall the drink was named after – The Pentire Headland – with its stunning cliffs and coastal walks.

Pentire Adrift for a Sea Breeze

The Sea Breeze you will be served in most bars is made with vodka rather than gin.  But, the original cocktail, created in the 1920s had a gin base. And, in any case, a bottle of Pentire Adrift is neither gin nor vodka.  According to the company’s own marketing info, it’s a non-alcoholic spirit with a coastal, herbaceous and fresh taste.  The botanicals include sea rosemary, rock samphire and sage, with citrus and sea salt.  It works brilliantly in a Sea Breeze mocktail and I can see it becoming my own Summer of 2021 drink of choice.  What I love about the new non-alcoholic spirits is that you can be grown up without wrecking your liver!

Sea Breeze Mocktail with Pentire

You can make a Sea Breeze with or without a cocktail shaker.  The advantage of shaking your drink is that the end result is less likely to become diluted by the ice in your glass.  Made with a non-alcoholic spirit rather than with vodka, the Sea Breeze becomes a more subtle drink that benefits from being kept as close to when it was mixed as possible

Here’s how to make one to try for yourself.

  • 100 ml Cranberry Juice
  • Ice
  • 1 slice Lime to garnish
Instructions
  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice

  2. Pour over the Pentire, Cranberry Juice and Grapefruit Juice

  3. Shake well

  4. Fill a Collins glass with ice

  5. Strain the Sea Breeze into the glass

  6. Garnish with a slice of lime

Recipe Notes

This mocktail can be made without a cocktail shaker by simply pouring the ingredients into a Collins glass and stirring.  I prefer mine shaken so that it's as cold as possible to serve to prevent the ice diluting the drink.
