The Churchill Bar, in association with the National Trust have brought a flavour of the serene gardens of Chartwell – Sir Winston Churchill’s family home – to the heart of London. Inspired by the long summers Sir Winston and Lady Churchill spent both at Chartwell, and on their romantic Italian honeymoon, the alfresco terrace is adorned with roses and wisteria, a water feature and replicas of Clementine’s intricate bench design, where no matter what weather the English summer cares to offer, couples can spend romantic summer evenings cosied up together wrapped in blankets if necessary;)
I was lucky enough to be invited to sample some of the brand new seasonal cocktails from the Churchill Bar’s new summer menu.
Celebrating Clementine Churchill’s membership of the Kent beekeepers’ association, the Bee Inspired was a heady mix of English blossom honeycomb and wild berry shrub with Nomad whisky, Campari, Benedictine and Marjoram adding balance. It was a proper drink blending sweetness, herbal notes and bitterness really effectively.
The Kitchen Garden was a bit of a showstopper featuring fresh Chartwell apple juice, exclusive to The Churchill Bar as it is the first time Chartwell has pressed their apples. Mixed with Grey Goose vodka. syrup made from apple, celery and garden herbs it comes presented with a copper watering can and a trowel. A light appley drink – it was perfect for a summer’s day.
‘I am easily satisfied with the very best’. Not only a Churchill quote but the name of a drink! Inspired by a Boulevardier it’s really a Negroni but with Botran 18 year old rum instead of gin. Stirred over lavender-smoked ice and with the addition of the smooth artichoke-based amaro Cynar the cocktail had a smokey elegance being served in a crystal carafe over an ice ball.
The Honeymoon was inspired by Churchill and Clementine’s honeymoon at Lake Como. Bombay Gin with Sangue Morlacco cherry liquor was shaken with Morello cherry jam and extra virgin olive oil creating a sweet gentle cocktail evoking a warm breeze across the beautiful Italian lake.
It’s never a good idea to drink on an empty stomach and we were treated to several delicious small plates of canapés. The Churchill Bar’s food menu is bursting with British culinary delights such as Homemade Sausage Rolls, a Chilled Beetroot & Raspberry Summer Soup, and even a Ploughman’s Board. A Trio of Summer Desserts and a seasonal Rhubarb & Raspberry Sundae are just some of the delights to satisfy those with a sweet tooth.
We feasted on pert little towers of delicious Dressed Devon Crab on white toast. Balls of Loch Fyne Smoked salmon were filled with cream cheese and dill for a great take on a classic combo. The salmon was excellent quality as you’d expect.
Grilled Aubergine stuffed with rocket, goat’s cheese and sun-dried tomatoes summoned up Mediterranean aromas and flavours while Citrus Marinated Tiger Prawns came fried in a light batter with a sweet chilli dip on the side.
Launching on Thursday 8 June and running through until the end of October 2017, The Churchill Bar & Terrace which is open daily from 9am until late and brings a taste of a quintessentially English summer to Marylebone, the chic centre of London’s West End. If you’re in the mood for a five-star experience then it’s a perfect choice.
