Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Canggu

Canggu is a coastal village on the southwest coast of Bali, Indonesia. This popular resort is known for its thriving surf scene and laid-back bohemian vibe. It’s teeming with scooters, beach bars, massage parlours, paddy fields, hip cafés, boutiques, yoga studios and co-working spaces, all leading down to Batu Bolong Beach. Here you’ll find surfers, live music, cocktails at sunset and much more. Right in the vibrant heart of it all, tucked away on a side street, you’ll find Chesa Canggu – a quiet haven amidst the bustle.

Chesa Canggu is a charming contemporary-style 4-star boutique hotel, built around two good-sized swimming pools, which are flanked with palm trees and sun loungers.

We couldn’t have arrived to a warmer welcome – everyone at Chesa Canggu was truly delightful, making every part of our stay a real pleasure. The level of hospitality really stands out, with warm, attentive staff who contact you via WhatsApp to confirm your arrival time and offer help at every opportunity.

Rooms at Chesa Canggu

There are 36 rooms, set over two floors; ours was on the ground floor, with a balcony looking out over the pool. On arrival, the beds were decorated with flower petals, playful towel sculptures and a lovely welcome message – a thoughtful touch that immediately set the tone.

The décor is modern, with a grey stone floor, a sisal rug, cream-painted walls, and a palette of soft, muted tones. Furnishings include a daybed and desk, making a clever use of space. The room itself is compact but well-designed, with everything we needed – comfortable beds dressed in white linen, TV (with Netflix included), safe, mini bar, tea-making facilities, and a super-clean, modern shower room.
Glass doors opening onto the balcony, complete with cushy seating and the pool area, create a seamless indoor -outdoor feel.

Dining at Chesa Canggu

THARA Kitchen & Bar sits at the front of the hotel, offering a touch of al fresco with one side opening onto the street and a feel of Canggu, though it’s still remarkably quiet and peaceful.

This sleek, modern space has stone floors and wooden tables, and it’s hung with greenery. Thara offers all-day dining, from breakfast through to lunch and dinner, in a relaxed, easy-going setting.

The menu brings together a mix of Western and Asian dishes. We enjoyed delicious, healthy breakfast bowls, alongside Balinese favourites such as nasi goreng and mie goreng, as well as beautifully presented nourishing salads, fresh fish and meat dishes – simple, flavourful and well executed.

One afternoon, we took tea upstairs in the hotel’s relaxed lounge, a calm, airy space perfect for escaping the midday heat.

Tiered trays arrived at our table laden with an enticing mix of savoury and sweet treats, an indulgent, leisurely pause in the day.

Facilities at Chesa Canggu

If you’re anything like me, you’ll happily spend hours by the pool, swimming, lounging, and getting lost in a good book. Here at Chesa, you’re spoilt for choice with two good-sized pools, both feeling pleasantly tucked away from the buzz outside.

If you’re keen to keep up your fitness routine, there’s a well-equipped gym on hand. Or, if relaxation is more your pace, the lounge area offers a calm and comfortable spot to unwind, and it makes an excellent co-working space.

Exploring Canggu

If shopping is your thing, you only need to step out the door and within minutes you’re on the main street, lined with boho boutiques, jewellery shops, cafés and bars and endless massage parlours, where for a very reasonable price you can stop for a foot or body massage…divine!

By night, the area really comes alive. The crowd is young and lively, with beach clubs, nightclubs and many bars hosting live music, and, of course, plenty of tempting happy hours to draw you in.

And for beach lovers, Batu Bolong Beach is just a 5-minute walk away – a long stretch of sandy shoreline full of life, from surfers to Hindu ceremonies, with spectacular sunsets to round it all off.

The beach bars spill onto the sand, serving cocktails and cold beers, with live music adding to the lively, laid-back atmosphere.

Canggu is a fantastic destination in Bali for surfers, solo travellers, digital nomads, couples and groups of friends looking for a sociable atmosphere and easy-going beach vibes. And if you want a central, but peaceful place to stay, I can highly recommend Chesa Canggu. The staff are so lovely, the setting feels just right, and everything you need for good food and proper relaxation is right on hand.
