A Taste of the Alps in Berkshire – Cliveden’s Astor Restaurant’s Terrace has Been Transformed for the Winter Season

Arriving at Cliveden in Berkshire on a wintry afternoon just as the sun was disappearing set the tone beautifully for the evening ahead. I had enjoyed the drive. Just 45 minutes from North London, with the final part of the journey through winding country lanes. The long, tree-lined drive was positively glowing gold in the fading light. It’s the kind of arrival that immediately slows you down as you can’t help but marvel at the historic architecture and wonder how many have set foot inside before you.

As I stepped out of the car, the crisp air made me appreciate the leg warmers hiding under my dress, and I pulled my scarf and hat a bit tighter. I had pulled out all the stops for the dress code of ‘Alpine Chic’ – woolly, black dress, pom pom hat, fluffy faux fur coat. Even so, I was cold, and an icy wind was picking up, so I really hoped there would be some kind of heated seating area.

I needn’t have worried. The Cliveden Astor Après Ski Pop-Up has thought of everything. It is a stylish lesson in alpine chic. Set on the elegant outdoor terrace of the Astor Grill restaurant, the cosy courtyard space has been transformed into a playful winter hideaway – complete with vintage-style cable-car gondola seating, velvety soft throws and warm, ambient lighting that almost mimics the glow of a mountain lodge. It feels like a fully fledged seasonal escape in a Richard Burton movie.

The drinks menu is equally considered. The speciality cocktails give a little nod to Alpine traditions while maintaining that refined Cliveden twist. You can choose from a fabulous selection of fragrant seasonal botanicals and winter warmers. Sloe Royale (Sloe gin, Nyetimber, blackberry), Aperol Spritz (Aperol, Nyetimber, orange) or The Astor Mule (Hawkridge Limoncello, Beluga vodka, ginger beer). If those don’t take your fancy, there is Mulled Wine, of course, Hot Chocolate – with or without Peppermint Schnapps and Schlumeli Pflumli (coffee, Schnapps, whipped cream).

The DJ played some fantastically cheesy 80s hits as the nibbles made their way around. The food menu continues the theme with well-executed classics like Gruyère Fondue with new potatoes, brussels sprouts, baby corn and bread and Reblochon Tartiflette with sliced potato and pancetta. I rather liked the Cauliflower Cheese Bites with Black Garlic Ketchup. There are also dessert bites. Kirsch-laden Chocolate Fondue with Strawberries and delightful Appenzeller – gingerbread and frangipane bites with a touch of lemon curd.

All in all, the flavours are rich, comforting and elegant – very in keeping with the grandeur of Cliveden, but there is also a wonderful, down-to-earth cosiness in this little, stable courtyard space that brings a warm and homely vibe. And that’s what stands out the most for me. It’s relaxed and easy. Yes, of course, the whole thing is over the top! But it’s good food, creative drinks and a cosy setting that encourages you to slow down – and that’s what we all need at this time of year before the seasonal madness sets in.

I was glad that I’d made the short trip out of London. Whether you’re a cocktail enthusiast, a design lover, or simply looking for a little pick-me-up in the gorgeous, twinkly surroundings of one of Britain’s most beautiful hotels, this pop-up delivers an uplifting and delicious winter experience.

Astor Après Ski Terrace is open now until mid-February 2026.

It is located at Cliveden House & Spa, Taplow, Berkshire, SL6 0JF.
