Easy Gin Cocktails to Make at Home

Ad: This content is written in conjunction with mymoneypocket.co.uk

When you want to make a cocktail at home, where do you start?  For many of us, it’s as simple as a good, classic Gin and Tonic. Made with quality gin and artisan tonic it really is a first-class drink. But, there are plenty of other simple, gin-based cocktails which you should try. Many of them come with a fascinating history – the Gimlet, for example, was created to make drinking lime juice (to prevent scurvy) more palatable for sailors. And even the humble tonic water was introduced as a method of helping people take quinine to treat malaria. Each of our reviews tells you a little about the origin of the cocktail.

Tanqueray Gin & Tonic

Start by making sure you have a selection of gins. We’d suggest checking out the options at Master of Malt, where you’ll find everything from well-known brands through to smaller artisan makers like Silent Pool and Bathtub gin. Don’t discount the major brands – we always keep a bottle of Tanqueray and one of  Gordons in our drinks cabinet. Other basic ingredients we’d recommend you keep in your store cupboard include a range of good mixers, cocktail garnishes such as Opies cherries, lemon slices, cocktail onions and gherkins. Fresh lemon and lime are also essential – and I’d recommend making yourself a batch of simple syrup.

Gordons Pink Gin Spritz ingredients

In terms of equipment, you need a cocktail shaker of some sort and a selection of glasses including Martini glasses, gin and champagne coupes and Collins glasses. If you feel the need to stock up on your options, you can save money by signing up for mymoneypocket where you’ll get a discount from a whole range of well known online retailers including Master of Malt and Waitrose Cellar for your spirits and mixers and Heals, Cox and Cox or Amara for your cocktail accessories and glasses. It’s an easy way to save a little money – joining mymoneypocket.co.uk takes less than 5 minutes and is completely free of charge. Once you’ve signed up, you can save money on literally thousands of brands – with money off vouchers and cashback offers on brands like Wilko, Matalan, Booking.com and more. You could save thousands of pounds each year!

Martinez and Martin Miller Winterful

After that, it’s a matter of taste. We’ve picked some of our favourite cocktails – mostly classics or classics with a twist – to share with you here. Starting with a simple Gin and Tonic and working through drinks like the negroni or the gimlet to longer drinks like a gin fizz.

Here are a few ideas to get you started

Our Favourite Gin Cocktails

Classic Gin Cocktails and Cocktails with a twist - here are some of our favourite Gin based drinks

The Perfect Gin and Tonic

Theperfect gin and tonic is a simple enough drink to make. Do check that you have a good gin coupe glass, a quality mixer and that you pick a garnish to complement the gin. We love Tanqueray No. Ten

Elderflower Gimlet Recipe

We've mixed our Gimlet with Elderflower Liqueur, but you can enjoy this drink with just lime juice, gin and simple syrup.

White Lady Cocktail with an Orange Twist

A White Lady mixes a good quality gin with Cointreau for an orange note - and shakes the whole mixture up with egg-white for a lovely lacy white froth. An elegant cocktail that is perfect to sip

A Seasonal Martinez Cocktail

The Martinez is said to be the precursor of the Martini - and very delicious it is too - a simple mixture of vermouth, maraschino and bitters to complement a good quality gin, served in a coupe glass with a twist of orange

The Perfect Negroni with MARTINI

The perfect Negroni is a mixture of red and white vermouth with gin served on the rocks with an orange garnish. As simple as it sounds - and a delicious aperitif.

Pink Gin Spritz with Gordon's

Perhaps the simplest of summer drinks - this pink gin spritz is made with a mixture of gin, sparkling water and prosecco, garnished with strawberries. Curiously, pink gin used to be something quite different. Click through to find out more

Elderflower Gin Fizz to enjoy three ways.

We've made this Elderflower Gin Fizz three ways - using no-alcohol Cleangin and elderflower cordial for a mocktail and working up to a full cocktail with St-Germain and Tanqueray No. Ten. Find out how to enjoy this refreshing summer drink whichever way suits you best
