An Airport Escape Before You Set Foot on the Plane.
4.5 out of 5.0 starsAirports are not usually known for their food. Often they seem to be worlds of plastic-wrapped sandwiches, wilted lettuce and dishes that taste only of delay. When we are flying, we crave edible comfort and perhaps a touch of luxury. But for years, that has felt like too much to ask.

Gordon Ramsay Plane Food Market at Heathrow Terminal 5 is uniquely far more than a quick refuelling stop. It recognises that travellers are human beings. It’s very much what we need in my view – tired, rushed with children clinging to our legs and phones buzzing with departure alerts, we deserve food that lifts the spirits rather than testing our patience.
Plane Food first opened in 2008 with the bold idea that airport dining could be enjoyable. For me, it was a secret hideaway, somewhere to escape without paying lounge fees and spend my cash on some decent food before a long flight. Now, it returns as a food market perfect for both the indecisive and the adventurous. Plane Food Market is for those who want comfort and those who want excitement, sometimes both at once. I went along to check it out, and I’m delighted to report that both the newly refurbished space and extended menu are fabulous.

There are cocktails for a moment of calm before take-off. A grab-and-go counter caters to those with minutes to spare. Soft seating beckons you to stop, rest your luggage, and reclaim a little peace. A backdrop of runway views adds to the sense of escapism, especially for those who secretly love watching planes come and go. Within the sphere of airport dining, it feels almost miraculous.
Ramsay has drawn together favourites from across his international restaurant portfolio, as if to say: “Yes, you may be in transit, but you can still enjoy something delicious (and perhaps already familiar).”

From Lucky Cat, expect Spicy Tuna Rolls, Bonito Fried Duck Leg Bao and GFC (Gordon Fried Chicken), bold flavours that hint at faraway destinations.
Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips offers a nostalgic nod to childhood holidays with fish encased in crisp, golden batter, complemented by delicious traditional sauces.

Street Burger delivers wonderfully indulgent smashed patties.
Street Pizza hands over slices crowned with beef short rib and quietly reminds you that holidays often begin with carbs.
Hotter Than Hell Wings give lovers of heat a reason to feel energised ahead of boarding.

And for those who remember Plane Food’s original hits: the Full English Breakfast, Butter Chicken Curry, and the infamous Idiot Sandwich all remain. Icons endure for a reason.

The beauty of it all is this: at the airport, standard rules don’t apply. Pizza and sushi before 10 am? Go ahead. You are between worlds, and somewhere it must be Sushi O-Clock.
Terminal 5 moves millions of people a year. It can be overwhelming, a conveyor belt of humanity. But Plane Food Market offers a moment of tranquillity. The bar hums with happiness: friends and family toast to upcoming adventures. Business travellers pretend everything is fine and that 9 am cocktails are perfectly respectable. Eating at Plane Food Market feels like a small win, an indication that travel can be delightful long before the aircraft even taxis.

Plane Food Market is a nod to Ramsay’s worldwide reach. Street Pizza in Kuala Lumpur. Street Burger in Seoul. Fish & Chips in Vegas and Orlando. It is food that has travelled the world, now returning to Britain’s international doorstep. Placing it in Terminal 5 is almost poetic. London is both a home and a launching point for journeys that stretch around the world.
Airport dining has promised transformation before, only to leave us clutching another joyless sandwich. Suitcases will still clip your ankles, and you will still hear your life narrated by an overhead speaker. But Plane Food Market is not trying to be Michelin-starred. Its mission is to offer good food, served quickly, by people who understand that travel is at once thrilling and exhausting.

For years, airport meals have been the last disappointment before an uncomfortable flight. Gordon Ramsay Plane Food Market looks at that bleak tradition and replaces it with a plate of hot food, a chilled cocktail and a signal that life can be enjoyed even in a departure lounge. If you prefer, you can even order from the grab-and-go counter and pick up food to take with you, rather than sitting down to dine. Perfect if you are in a rush or looking for something decent to eat on the plane.
But I recommend you arrive early and treat yourself. Order what looks delicious, not what seems sensible. And savour this rare feeling: that even before take-off, you are already going somewhere wonderful.
