The perfect brunch spot in Knightsbridge

The Fifth Floor Café is located in Knightsbridge’s iconic department store Harvey Nichols. There’s something rather special about visiting this lovely restaurant, whether it’s for lunch, dinner or cocktails.  You can either sit outside on their pretty rooftop terrace or in their glistening and airy indoor restaurant area which has a fabulous high ceiling, large windows, gold metal chairs and white marble-topped tables. Whatever you choose it always manages to capture the spirit of London in style.

On the gloriously sunny Easter weekend, we went along to try out their weekend menu. As the sun was shining, we chose to sit out on the terrace in partnership with Monkey 47 overlooking the Knightsbridge rooftops, although it’s good to know that there are heaters available and they provide throws so you are able to keep warm whatever the weather. There’s a seasonal cocktail menu or you can stick to a classic Bloody Mary as we did. I always think it’s the perfect brunch accompaniment and a great way to kick off the weekend and ours were mixed just how I like it with a warm and spicy kick.

Bloody Mary

The weekend menu is full of tempting brunch and lunch style dishes for both sweet and savoury palates. It features classics like French toast with a blueberry compote and crème fraiche, Eggs  Benedict in three different styles (Royale, Florentine or Pulled Pork), Smashed Avocado with chilli, coriander, shallots, roast cherry tomato and poached eggs on sourdough and a hearty Vegetarian Breakfast with all the trimmings.  Then, there are filled bagels, rolls and club sandwiches, Caesar salads, plus classic fish and chips, burgers and half a traditional roast chicken for sharing. There’s also a wonderful selection of pastries available, which included baklava pistachio and pomegranate and scrumptious savoury filled croissants.

Croissant with egg and Parmesan

Our freshly baked croissant was light, buttery and generously filled with creamy scrambled egg and Parmesan cheese, it’s such a great pairing, I must remember to try this at home.

The Eggs Royale was a standout dish, with perfectly poached eggs and smoked salmon served on a piece of thickly sliced toasted brioche with sweet and nutty caviar bathed in a velvety hollandaise sauce.

To follow on,  a delicious Crayfish Caesar salad, fresh crisp cos lettuce topped with mounds of juicy crayfish and salty anchovies, Parmesan and crunchy croutons in a classic Caesar dressing.

Indulging perhaps more than was necessary (but hey it’s the weekend) we also ordered a seeded bagel filled with satisfying layers of tender and moist ham hock and a crunchy celeriac slaw with creamy chipotle mayonnaise.

We drank a carafe of perfectly chilled Rosé, which almost made me feel as if summer was here. And finally, a shared plate of excellent Neal’s Yard cheeses – creamy goats, a nutty cheddar and a tangy blue served with crumbly oat biscuits, wafer-thin thyme crackers and a sweet mango chutney washed down with fresh black coffee.

Whether you’re in Knightsbridge for a shopping trip or a spot of sightseeing, I can highly recommend visiting the Fifth Floor Café… the food is fabulous, the setting a lovely, the service is great and the staff are utterly charming. The perfect way to while away the weekend.
