Enter the world of Lucy Wong without leaving London
In the mood for a stylish drink in sumptuous surroundings? A glamorous soiree or even afternoon tea? Look no further as The Breakfast Group (the masterminds behind Opium, a firm Soho favourite) have got you covered with their latest Asian-inspired cocktail bar, Lucy Wong. Located in Fitzrovia and set to launch in late February, expect this eclectic venue to transport you from the bustling streets of London straight to 1950s Hong Kong.
The concept behind the bar is drawn from Richard Mason’s 1957 love letter novel ‘The World of Suzie Wong’ and is named after the imagined daughter of the novel’s titular character, Lucy: a London socialite famed for hosting extravagant parties in her Fitzrovia apartment. The bar aims to emulate the same allure of timeless decadence, whilst also doffing its cap to The Breakfast Group’s owner, Eric Yu’s, own memories of growing up in Hong Kong during the 60s through to the 80s. ‘Lucy Wong will be an exciting launch for us in London – a new style and concept for our bars and restaurants and a site that is very special for me. It’s a tribute to my mother and allows me to tell my story of growing up in Hong Kong’, he says.
On entering Lucy Wong’s you will be immediately treated to lavish interiors influenced by Chinese design. On the drinks list will be inventive Asian riffs on the classics, which change regularly and pair perfectly with the food. Guests can expect the highest quality from the menu curated by mixologist maestro Dré Masso, responsible for propelling The Group’s Opium Bar onto the UK’s Best 50 Cocktail bars list. Among the signature creations are the Cherry Blossom Manhattan, Eastern Sour and Dragon Old Fashioned. To help add sustenance, the food menu encourages diners to share and enjoy a number of quintessential Cantonese plates, including succulent roast meats, indulgent dim sum platters and sides of Singapore rice noodles. On Saturday afternoons, there will even be Chinese tea on offer.
Come the evenings, the venue will be filled with the buzz of live music and these contemporary sounds will reflect the eras that have influenced the stylish atmosphere of the bar. Throughout the opening weeks, guests can expect to see acts from the likes of jazz artist Luca Manning and duo George & Fran, along with a whole host of DJs spinning jazz, soul and more. Evenings turn to mornings on Fridays or Saturdays with a late night notice until 3 am. So it’s worth settling in and checking out the hidden courtyard terrace, perfect for catching up with friends or cosying up to that special someone.
