The Best Location in Madrid?

If Madrid isn’t high on your list of European cities to visit, then it should be. Confident in its own identity and with an elegant sense of restrained grandeur, there’s plenty to see and do; from fantastic food, football and flamenco to some of the greatest and most iconic artworks of Western culture. 
But to make the most of the city and its thriving nightlife, having a central location is a must. No hotel in Madrid is better located than the NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado. NH is a global hotel group with the ‘Collection’ being their top destinations. 

The NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado is located on the elegant Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo, right opposite the famous Statue of Neptune, which we could see directly from our bedroom. You can book rooms or suites ‘with a view’ and it’s worth it to feel as if you are in the beating heart of the city. The Antonio Palacios designed hotel building started life as a Palace in the early 20th century before becoming home to an insurance company, before reinventing itself as the Canary Island hotel and now the NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado. 

Situated in the ‘Golden Triangle’ of museums (the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza), the hotel is in the perfect area for your culture fix. There is another NH hotel on the same road, so don’t be like me and try to check in at the wrong one. Head for the fountain!

One of the greatest pleasures of Madrid is going bar hopping and sampling the varied tapas styles that the city has to offer. The NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado is situated right by the literary quarter, the Barrio de las Letras, which is full of characterful bars where you can buy a glass of wine, sherry, Tinto de Verano, or a beer and some wonderful tapas. The Royal Botanic Gardens and the delightful Retiro Park are also close by. 

Our bedroom at the NH Paseo del Prado was simply gorgeous, light and airy with a brilliant view. The oat-coloured wallpaper is textured, and with the light wood fittings and wooden floors, the colours create a very relaxing ambience. Colour accents come from Rothko-style artwork, cushions and an armchair. There’s a firm but very comfortable king-size bed made up with top-quality linen and very soft pillows. The room specification features a sofa, a large flat screen TV, a kettle and coffee machine, a well-stocked minibar, and there are plenty of electrical sockets and charging points to keep your gadgets happy.  With a double wardrobe fitted with a safe and a steamer, and a full-length mirror, there’s no excuse for not looking fabulous. With plenty of cupboard space and a shoe rack, there’s plenty of space to unpack, and if, like me, your shoes need a wipeover, then NH Paseo del Prado provides a handy shoe polishing cloth.

The bathroom is a symphony of green and grey marble. I particularly liked the double sink unit and the elegant white bath with a handheld shower.

There’s also a standalone shower enclosed by a glass partition, which gives you an amazing drenching. As well as providing dressing gowns and slippers, a shaving mirror and hairdryer, you can find a sisal pad for exfoliating, a dental kit, mouthwash and vanity and shaving kits.

Despite its history, the NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado uses technology efficiently. There is a bespoke NH app to help you with your booking, and an Amazon Alexa in your room set up to answer all of your questions. On the lower ground floor is a dining space that is home to the hotel’s breakfast buffet. It’s a sumptuous spread; there are meats, cheeses, tortillas, sandwiches, stuffed croissants, salads, bread, eggs,  bacon and sausages, cereals, yoghurt pastries, fruits and even a churro machine; and with a wide selection of juices and freshly made coffee and teas to drink, did I mention the Cava and wine!

NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado has a stylish, intimate bar called El Anfitrión that turns into a piano bar at the weekends. 

And there is a restaurant in the hotel, Chez Madrid, that offers Paris bistro-style dining with Madrileno influences. 

One of the most exciting things about the NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado is the gym, which has the most wonderful rooftop view of the city.

There’s still so much more I want to do in Madrid; our 3-night stay barely scratched the surface, so I know where I’ll be staying next time around. The NH Collection Madrid Paseo del Prado certainly ticked all my boxes. You should try it.
