Golfing games with a high-tech twist
4.5 out of 5.0 starsTraditionally a classic holiday pastime, Puttshack has elevated the simple game of mini golf into a high-tech and thrilling ‘competitive socialising’ experience in a variety of locations across the UK. Aimed at families, friends, or groups of colleagues, Puttshack offers aspiring golfers the chance to win prizes, enjoy the thrill of sinking a hole in one, and turn mini golf into a whole evening out with a wide range of food and drinks in centrally located venues.
I was invited to try my hand at putting in the vast underground Bank location, in the heart of the city of London. Entering Puttshack has a space-age feel, with neon signs and flashing lights that take the mini golf experience into a futuristic setting.
After registering on the large touchscreens near the entrance, we were given a ‘tee time’ and we headed over to our course. There are three options available at Puttshack Bank, named Emerald, Ruby, and Sapphire, which cater to different skill levels. We started off on the Emerald course and were soon very impressed by the innovative use of technology in making Puttshack and mini golf unlike any other. Firstly, cheaters beware – there is special tech inside the ball which automatically counts your strokes, making pen and paper scorecards redundant and allowing for instantaneous ranking of your group members on the electronic live leaderboards.
On each hole, you can get bonus points and win prizes by hitting the ball into special areas of the course (or be penalised by hitting it into the out of bounds areas, often strategically located right next to the highest scoring areas), or by getting a hole in one. These additions to the classic mini golf format make it a more engaging experience and add more jeopardy, making catching up to the leader a more interesting challenge. Moving platforms, musical instruments, spinning wheels of fortune – the courses offer a wide range of innovations which are as impressive as they are fun and entertaining.
Having settled at one win each across two of the three courses at Puttshack, my companion and I then settled down into a comfortable booth in the central bar section of the venue to enjoy the range of food and drinks.
The signature cocktails were delicious and reasonably priced. A special recommendation is the delicious spiced pineapple mezcal margarita, with Casamigos mezcal, Tapatio tequila, Ancho Reyes Verde liqueur, pineapple and lime juice, mango popsicle, salt and pineapple crisp. The fun rum punch with five different rums: Pampero White; Myers’s; Wray & Nephew; Trois Rivières Blanc; and Plantation OFTD – along with Melonade liqueur, orgeat, grenadine, lime, pineapple and orange bitters is a bold tropical choice.
The food menu offers a wide range of global cuisines from sourdough flatbread pizzas to burgers, empandas, gyozoa, lentil dahl, Korean bao buns, samosas and poké bowls – there will be a dish for everyone in your golfing group.
In the heart of the City of London, Puttshack is a clear go-to for corporate entertainment, but also offers a fun day out for families or friends in an excellent location with a truly innovative take on mini golf, which will impress beginners and experienced players alike.
