Saicho celebrates Afternoon Tea Week at Sheraton Park Lane
Looking for a luxurious non-alcoholic fizz? The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane is currently offering guests a complimentary glass of Saicho Jasmine to add some non-alcoholic sparkle to the famed afternoon tea for afternoon tea week running from 8-14 August 2022. We were invited along to enjoy afternoon tea at the Palm Court which has original art deco features, providing a sophisticated backdrop for a leisurely afternoon activity in the summer. Since its heyday as the hangout of choice for socialites, celebrities, and the aristocracy upon opening in 1927, the hotel has a long history of bringing people together in the heart of Mayfair.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea features a special selection of British scones, pastries and savoury treats for £49. For the perfect afternoon tea pairing, guests can also enjoy a bottle of Saicho Sparkling Tea for £28.
Saicho is a single-origin sparkling tea brand which offers an elevated way to enjoy non-alcoholic drinking using premium teas that promote as much nuance, flavour and provenance as premium wines. The complimentary glass of Saicho Jasmine is scented with jasmine blossoms, a green tea from Fuding, China. It has a delicate floral aroma and notes of apple sherbet, lychee and vanilla, which tasted slightly sweet and made the perfect non-alcoholic aperitif that I almost finished my glass by the time our server left.
I also had the opportunity to sample the Saicho Darjeeling which has notes of wood spice, nectarine and muscatel. However, the Saicho Jasmine was my preferred option for a tea pairing as it was the lighter and sweeter option so we also had a bottle of it along with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea.
For those who prefer alcoholic options, The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane has partnered with Louis Pommery England to present the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea with a glass of Pommery Champagne Brut Royal for £59. There are also various champagnes and wines on offer including brut, rosé, premiums and sparkling wine with a glass starting from £14.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea features intrinsically designed pastries and delectable savoury treats inspired by the 1920s with a contemporary twist and comes in the classic or vegan option. It is served all at once in a ‘birdcage’ cake stand, aptly named after the nickname the hotel received in the early twenties. We chose the classic option and the savoury treats contained a tasty selection of sandwiches including coronation chicken, free range egg mayonnaise, smoked salmon and truffled cream cheese with cucumber. My favourite was the smoked salmon with dill, caper and lemon butter just because it felt like a perfect summer treat to pair the Saicho Jasmine with.
The plain and golden raisin scones were served warm and came with a generous helping of homemade seasonal preserves and Cornish clotted cream. The texture of the scones was just right and I had a generous helping of strawberry jam with Cornish clotted cream which tasted divine.
The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane partners with award-winning Newby Tea to create their tea selection so my companion and I paired the scones with a Fujian Oolong China. It’s a light yellow-amber tea with a floral aroma containing notes of orchid that tastes slightly sweet and fruity. Perfect for my palate! I have a bias towards light and fruity beverages during the summer to complement the sunny weather.
The cakes are finely crafted and inspired by British heritage which includes a Battenberg, a Royal Apricot Mandarin Chocolate Cake, a Queen’s Hat and Victoria Sponge. The Battenberg was nicely decorated in the Queen’s colours and it was both a feast for the eyes and the palate with flavours of raspberry and vanilla. Meanwhile, the Royal Apricot Mandarin Chocolate Cake was a comforting chocolate cake with a fruity twist. The Queen’s Hat had an Earl Grey and granny smith lime interior which made me feel like royalty. Finally, the Victoria Sponge was probably the most exquisite one that I’ve tasted in my lifetime.
To accompany these sweet delights, I ordered a Rooibos Tiramisu tea which had a sugary cocoa aroma and tastes of nuts, chocolate and coffee with a sweet finish. It was definitely a delightful tea to close the afternoon tea experience.
