Bottomless Brunch with Funk

The Blues Kitchen is a well-known London nightlife hotspot with its iconic live music bars located in Brixton, Camden, Shoreditch, and one location outside of London situated in Manchester. Having enjoyed several fun evenings out at Blues Kitchen’s various London locations, I was pleased to be invited to experience the Shoreditch venue in the daytime at The Hip Hop Orchestra Brunch in Shoreditch.

The brunch concept involves matching a selected Blues Kitchen BBQ menu and an additional 90-minute bottomless drinks package with hip hop, afrobeat and R&B classics played by DJs and two live performances from the impressive Re:Imagine Orchestra band across the afternoon. Those looking to kick off their Saturday with a buzz need to book their tickets in advance and arrive promptly at 1 pm – the bottomless drinks package starts at the same time for everyone. The Hip Hop brunch is located on the right-hand side of Blues Kitchen’s impressively large Shoreditch venue, in a cordoned-off area where guests sit on low bar stools around small tables in a jazz club style seating arrangement. When we arrived on a recent Saturday, the area was already full and stayed packed for the duration of the brunch and live performances.

The food menu is divided into two sections, one of small plates and another of mains. There’ll be something for everyone in the small plates section with options ranging from buffalo or Szechuan chicken wings to smashed avocado tostada and hot spinach and artichoke dip. The mains consist of burgers and sandwiches such as the Big Boss Burger or Shrimp Sandwich. We enjoyed the bacon double cheeseburger which was juicy and served with crisp fries. The vegan cheeseburger was flavourful with generous mustard, with convincingly realistic vegan cheese and plenty of vegetables.

For those wishing to take advantage of the bottomless drinks offering, guests can add on 90 minutes of bottomless Prosecco, Mimosa or Rum Punch. The rum punch was fruity and refreshing, and the prosecco was crisp and tasty. Staff at Blues Kitchen were friendly and attentive, with drinks top-ups being offered regularly and food orders also arriving promptly. Also available on the drinks menu was an array of classic cocktails including some more intriguing options such as a lychee martini, and a strawberry and basil bramble. A wide range of draught beers were also available on tap.

Traditionally a night-time venue, The Hip Hop Orchestra Brunch at Blues Kitchen is already cementing itself as a lunchtime favourite in the Shoreditch area, and the concept is well-executed – matching the Blues Kitchen reputation for live music with its informal menu of easy bites and flowing cocktails. For those looking to stay on the dance floor for the whole weekend, or relax into the weekend with some live music, Blues Kitchen is worth a visit.
