Somewhere Green to lay your head.
Finding a reasonably priced hotel in Central London is always a challenge. There are, of course, the budget chain hotels but if you are looking for something a little different without a premium price tag, you may struggle.
There are just two Wesley Hotels, one in Camden and one in Euston. With rates that start at under £100, they are a rare find. But, what’s it like to stay in one of them? I went along to the Euston Wesley, tucked in between Euston Station and Drummond Street, to find out for myself.
The Wesley Hotel Euston is less than 5 minutes’ walk from the station but tucked into a quiet corner. The original building was a scientific centre, used for research into non-ferrous metals. When it was taken over by the Methodist Church it evolved into a centre with accommodation for young visitors to London, an international community in which people of different nationalities, cultures and faiths could meet.
What exists today is a rather quirky hotel that will make your wallet believe it’s a budget option, although there are plenty of features which elevate your stay. Despite quite innovative use of technology for check in and check out etc, it’s super friendly, with staff on hand to help if you have any problems. When I visited, The Wesley Hotel was superbly clean throughout, from the lobby to the common areas and my own room. There’s a restaurant, a gym, a bar, meeting rooms and even a tiny courtyard garden. Not the sort of facilities you generally find in a hotel at this price point.
My room, a superior double, was spacious by London standards, with a large flat screen TV, a king sized bed and a neat work space. The ensuite was modern, clean and fresh with nice touches including a reed diffuser, complimentary toiletries and plenty of white fluffy towels. Simple, bright decor made this a wonderfully restful space. If you are looking for a true budget option, The Wesley offers single rooms from £72, while there are also executive suites if you are planning a longer stay. And, there are accessible rooms throughout the hotel.
I had space to work, with a small but perfectly formed desk/dressing table and there were decent tea and coffee making facilities, together with a flask of water. Joy of joy, The Wesley Hotel Euston has airconditioning that works and is easy to set.
The ensuite in my room at the Wesley Hotel was a neat but very efficient shower, with a superbly clean vanity and loo. It just didn’t feel budget, with fluffy towels and refreshingly good quality toiletries.
The breakfast buffet offers a broad selection of hot and cold dishes. From tempting pastries to a full English, you won’t feel you are missing out if you choose to indulge.
What more is there other than a superbly clean, friendly hotel that won’t break the bank? Well The Wesley Euston has particuarly strong eco credentials. Green Tourism Gold isn’t given away lightly, nor is Green Key certification – an international environmental standard for tourism. The hotel is recognised as a Climate Champion by the Camden Climate Alliance and takes part in the Mayor of London’s Business Climate Challenge. It also holds an ECOsmart Platinum award for management of energy, water consumption, building performance and more. As a customer you don’t notice anything though.
Nor will you notice some of the other practical measures – 100% renewables energy, reducing single use plastics, using water saving bathroom fittings, motion-sensitive lighting and efficient heating and cooling systems. What you may spot is that there’s no hotel parking – but then, it’s literally 2 minutes from Euston (and 10 from Kings Cross St Pancras).
And, you might just fall in love with the covered courtyard garden, which was created on land previously used as a garage.
Now, I was invited to review The Wesley as their guest. But, finding myself in need of a second night in town at the last minute, I extended my stay for a second night. If that’s not an endorsement I don’t know what is!
