Doing things the Frank Sinatra Way – J&B Sinatra Sour
Did you know it’s National Whiskey Sour Day today in the USA? One of my own favourite Whisky or Whiskey cocktails (depending on where your tipple originates), the Whisky Sour is an iconic cocktail that’s perfect for a warm Summer’s evening – and pretty good when the weather turns autumnal as it seems to have done today!
J&B Rare is a blended Scotch whisky that was created for the famous wine merchants Justerini & Brooks. J&B rare quickly became a society whisky, popular with all five members of the Rat Pack, with Cary Grant and with Truman Capote. It’s blended to create a smooth, elegant taste, with a fruity aromatic nose and an oaky spice finish. J&B’s four distilleries are all in Speyside and J&B rare is blended from Knockndo, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey. Produced using natural spring water from the local rivers that surround the distilleries, it’s a high-quality blend that’s perfect for cocktails.
So what better way to celebrate Whiskey Sour Day than with the J&B Sinatra Sour?
I’ve had great fun making my own, using some fabulous and very special Maraschino cherries from Starlino. These are made from Marasca cherries, a particular type of sour Morello cherries, which are first matured for 15 days in their own juice then aged for a further seven days to reach perfection. The result is VERY moreish – I kept eating my garnish cherries!
Here’s the recipe for a J&B Sinatra Sour for you to try at home.
A variation on a classic Whiskey sour using J&B blended whisky
- 35 ml J&B Rare Whisky
- 10 ml Freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 10 ml Sugar syrup 1:1 ratio
- 15 ml Pasteurised egg white
- 3 dashes Angostura Bitters
- 3 Maraschino Cherries

Put the Maraschino cherries on a cocktail stick and set to one side

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice

Add all the remaining ingredients and shake well for at least a minute

Double strain into a chilled coupe glass

Garnish with the cherries

Baked in a whisky cake
I bought a big ice cube tray specifically for whiskey it’s in the shape of a big diamond, so I normally love it just with ice. I have added ginger ale to it before and a squeeze of lime, that makes for a very warming autumn/winter drink
Little ice and coke. It tastes even better with good company!
With a big round ball of ice (I have a special mould) so it is cold and the ice doesn’t diltue the whisky too quickly!

I prefer to add a little spring/mineral water unless it’s a very high quality whisky.
If it is a good quality whisky then it has to be drunk neat. However, if it’s a blend then I love hot whisky toddy when the nights are cold.
